Subject: How do you make a good Face for POSER? Like 3D version of my face

How do I make a good face for poser? Ive tried the face room but It cant do things that facegen can do. Like the chins and jaw lines are always to big. I need to make a guy that kind of has a narrow face that also has girlish features. Actually its a friend of mine. Theres a couple friends that Id like to make faces in poser for. FaceGen makes Great faces but I cant get the heads features to move in Poser. I tried the demo of face shop. It didnt do very well. Very buggy. - The point is, Is there a program that makes good faces and then I can put them in poser? Or is there somthing for poser that would make good faces? Am I missing a technique ?  Cause I want the eyes to move and the mouths to open and close. Thanks Everyone!

You might find 'FaceShop' useful for the tune of about $60 dollars. I hope you're familiar with PhotoShop if you plan on getting any useful textures out of it. The morphs can be pretty good though. A thread about that program is right below your post. I guess this makes it a media blitz. link

There are possibly three 'known' ways to do this (ignoring FaceGen):

  1. Morph and morph some more in Poser
  2. Custom morph
  3. Alternate head geometry

With 1. you are sort of stuck with finding a combination of morphs and morph dial values that approximate a particular face - this could take literally days or weeks (if ever).  Much depends upon the versatility of the available morphs.

With 2. you have complete control but you need a modelling app (any of a thousand) and knowledge/experience in shaping geometry and creating morphs for Poser.

With 3. you are starting from scratch and modelling the head and replacing that of some existing Poser figure, rigging/morphing and all.  This is not for the inexperienced!

For approximate look-alikeness, 1. will do. For the most accurate with the least work/frustration, 2. is best approach.  A Custom head morph is basically taking the head geometry into a modelling app (properly) and moving points to resemble the intended target (orthographic views would be best here).  Then save the altered geometry for use as a new morph target in Poser.

FaceGen, I guess, aims to satifsy this as well as use the photo(s) as texturing.  The Poser FaceRoom attempts to do the same with limited success.  I still suggest 2. :)

C makes it easy to shoot yourself in the foot. C++ makes it harder, but when you do, you blow your whole leg off.

My way

1.  All starts ( or drops) with a couple of "very good" front and side facial shots.
a) to make the texture from
b) to use as reference in your 3D app

  1. Take the shots
    a) with a maximum zoom on a high zoom camera ( ex 10 x ) put some distance between you and your object to do this.  (a photographer will know this. it is about angles)
    b) Get even light left and right. Avoid shadows.

Now : take your favorite model and make the head texture using your shots from above.
Do NOT worry about shape. Just make a GOOD texture.

3.  Export the head of your favorite model from Poser as an obj and as morph target.

Load your favorite 3D proggie, import the head, texture it with your texture. (I use anim8or for this)

Import, and position a front and a side view of the face shots to use as reference material.
And, now, and only now, start moving the points around to make the morph.

Once finished, export the head, and import in Poser. Check, adjust the head and body textures around the neck area..

Start by doing a low poly model before jumping ad the high poly stuff.  it can be frustrating.

For this I use the (remapped) P4 Lo Res models.

The Face Room is really where it is at, when it comes to Poser!  It is leased from makers of FaceGen, and just has a much better feel!

The problem with the Face Room is that it takes a tramendous amount of vigilance!  Every time you leave, and re-enter the Face Room it becomes reset, and there is no way to save your progress!

So to get things done, with the Face Room, you need to start and not stop untill your're done.  You can Hiberbate your computer, with the face room open; but, from what I've experienced, I would'nt expect to leave the Face Room without at least 8-24 hours of tweaking!

Actually I've been holding off work there, just for this reason.  I recently was allowed to Beta-Test the Photoshop Version of FaceSHop, and it got me interested in knowing more of the Face Room.  I liked what I experienced alot, but I wo'nt go near it again untill I have al to to swing at it; and even at that I'm sure it would'nt dissapoint anyone if I spent more time than that, at once.

Thats So Werid Cause I downloaded the free trial of Faceshop and it was so buggy. Things would show and then disappear . If it worked I would so buy it! But that gave me the wrong Idea. But If you swear its Good maby Ill give it a shot. I just thought there was something maby I didnt know. Like I have shade, Daz and 3D max but I really have no experience in any of those. But If they could help me in this and other situations in poser Im totally down to learn how. Also if I took the face from face gen and imported it as an Obj and then got the numbers of say james or M3 s head geometry then spawned a prop with the grouping tool. Then exported the Obj as a Morph in the dimentions of  one of the heads. Then loaded it as a morph on the character could it work? I tried this a couple times based on another thread but it just says- Target Geometry has wrong number of vertices- I had to try it based on the fact that the Head in Facegen is based on the V3 Head. Hmm - Ok Im gonna try the anim8tor one 1st . If there are any other creative ways Lets hear them.

Oh and those faces from faceshop do look good!! I just would hope Its nothing like this demo Im trying Thats bugging out

FaceShop 3.5 is a new release (since Oct. 26) and it is offered FREE to previous FaceShop Pro users. With over 1,500 dowloads so far we had no bug reports other than the fact that it is not 64-bit clean (which means that you need to use it on 32-bit machines or mode). 
There's going to be a FREE service release SR1 to address 64-bit.
Please let me know how you like FaceShop 3.5.

No bug reports? What about the list of bugs you've had reported to you for Faceshop 3.5? (including Vista 32 bit problems)

So - not going to address the fact that at least 10 issues had been reported to you by the time you made that post, then?

Using trial software sounds emminently sensible - I have seen at least 1 report that the trial version has worked fairly well.
