Subject: If i have a bunch of trees or objects, why in my anim i get a flashing Shadow?

tebop ( ) posted Mon, 12 November 2007 at 9:53 PM · edited Sun, 02 February 2025 at 6:55 PM

My trees are not animated at all but if i make an anim , i get this unexpected Flashing that looks as if an airplane passed over my whole scene flashing a shadow on everything. One time i tried to fix this and it kind of worked. i did it by setting the cast shadows option of the trees to OFF.. But i don't know why i have to do this. i actually want those trees to have shadows. So why are shadows being flashed? I render in preview mode, that may have to do with it. any tips on how to fix this? Example is a scene with many trees and i want shadows( the basic preview shadow), but i dont' want flashing I'm on Poser 6

Guys here is an example of what i get. the first picture is normal the second is when the thing gets a flash of dark. the flashing is random. as if things were flying above my scene, which they are not. or as if the lights in poser were animated, which they are not. So why i get flashing?

this is the darkness that flashes . By the way i'm not animating the trees.. they are just part of my environment

examine all light graphs to determine source of problem.

tebop ( ) posted Mon, 12 November 2007 at 11:31 PM

my lights don't have any animation on them. so i don't know what causes it

step-frame until ya find the bad frame. check lighting in that frame.

i step frame, i look at the lights, NOTHINg.. there's nothing. And it still flashes dark.

I get a ton of flashing dark. at random points. like FLASH FLASH FLASH.........FLASH.........FLAHS FLASH.......................FLAHS FLASH FLASH Man it's annoying. i'm going to do a test. I will just shoot the scene with no camera animation. let's see if it's cam movement that makes it flash.

tebop ( ) posted Tue, 13 November 2007 at 10:09 AM

Ok results of test are: It didn't make a differecne. i'm getting a ton of flashing even if there is no cam animation( slow zooming motion). mmmm, what could it be? Wish more people would respond. By the way, my movie is made out of Preview mode( SHADED) not full render. i'm sure that's part of the reason, but i still don't see why this should happen

I have an update for you guys. I think i know what it is. It has to do with the trees i have( brought in from Vue) and for some reason it just does this flashing with those trees. maybe something to do with the transparency maps or the shaders. Because when i did it with Sreed software as opposed to Open GL, there was no transparency on the leaves( it was a black color as opposed to the transparency between leaves) and there was no flashing. So i guess if i don't want flashing i better change my trees to simplistic Stick and ball right from poser Primitives: ) Too bad, but i guess it's the only way to do it.

tebop ( ) posted Tue, 13 November 2007 at 10:30 AM

Ok last note: I also found that you can use Vue trees like the ones i used but if you dont' want flashing you have to turn off CAST shadows for that object. And you have to do it for every tree that yu use. I guess i'll do that

MungoPark ( ) posted Tue, 13 November 2007 at 10:41 AM

Are there transparency maps involved? They can cause this.

Mason ( ) posted Tue, 13 November 2007 at 11:21 AM

Your shadow maps are set too low in resolution. Increase their size or use raytracing and that should solve your problem.

tebop ( ) posted Tue, 13 November 2007 at 8:05 PM

Mason, i said i'm doing my Anims in Preview mode. i don't use any raytracing. It's just Display mode

tebop ( ) posted Tue, 13 November 2007 at 8:52 PM

Mungo Park. YES there are transparency maps. Wow, so that is what's causing it.. that sucks, cause if i don't have transparency maps then, my tree will be like a black ball with the leafs inside it but the space between leaves will be black and solid Is there no way to make it work? I mean it's ok.. i'll use Sphere and cylinder to make a tree( pretty cheap) or if there are trees for Poser that don't have separation of leaves .. are there any freebies like that?

Ok guys figured it out. at last. I thought about it hard and thought..mmmm... so i went to simple tab in material room. and the texture in the highlight section was the same as the texture in the Diffuse. then i said what if i delete this Highlight texture from the highligh section. cause you know if you move around a scene sometimes the highlight is what changes. i used to get flashing back when i first bought v3 and i applied the WET texture MAT which made her look like wet.. the flashing occured there too. and it was HIGHlighting that did it. so that's what i thought and YUP. it was that. after i deleted the texture map from the highlight section of all my trees, it's FLASHLESS: ) and i still have the great Vue trees in my animation with transparency.
