Subject: Weird problems with hair transparencies.

Prometheus273 ( ) posted Wed, 14 November 2007 at 2:02 PM · edited Mon, 25 November 2024 at 11:04 AM

I think I saw someone mention this before quite a while back but I don't know if there was any solution.  A lot of times the hair transparency maps get replaced with the texture map and they won't go away even if I apply them manually.  Even if I clear out everything and start from scratch, the texture map appears in the transparency node/window.
Is there a solution to this?  I know it will render fine, but it's really irritating.

Can we see a screenshot?

Here you go.  This is how it loads.  As you can see, the texture image is loaded into the transparency window.  If I delete that and enter the correct transparency map, it changes back to the texture map immediately.  If I turn the transparency all the way down to 0, the correct transparency map will appear, but then of course the hair is completely invisible.  If I turn the transparency back up to anything more than 0, the texture map reappears in the transparency window.

If I remove the texture map althogether, the transparency maps appear in the transparency window and work fine, but now the hair has no texture.

Oh wow. Never came across this issues.

I can barely read it but looks like you can click on white writing at top of Trans map and scroll to Daz hair file in Textures. Double click on Wedgehair.tr and let it replace Wedgehair.jpg. (Cannot remember name) I think that's all it is... Just a bad load or (hope not) lost file.

Put values back to default. Better yet, start from scratch and reload a new hair before starting. Too many changes...

I've done that every which way I can think of; in the material room (advanced and simple), I"ve cleared all the textures out and reloaded them one by one.  I even made new, renamed copies of the texture and the transparency maps and loaded those, but the same thing happens.

Prometheus273 ( ) posted Wed, 14 November 2007 at 7:31 PM

And I tried loading the transparency map into the texture winddw.  It duplicated the transparency map in the transparency window, just like it did with the texture, but if I put a texture in the texture window, it gets put into the transparency window too.
The weird thing is that if you look at the templates in the advanced material room, the Transparency Map shows the correct name of the transparency map, but it shows the image of the  texture map.

I"m sure I saw this problem posted here, but it was a long, long time ago.  I remember feeling some relief that it wasn't just me who was experiencing it.

I've seen this kind of confusion on rare occasion. In every case, it was that I had two different image files with the same name, in different folders. Poser seems to have some sort of cache lookup that only uses the last part of a files path, the name, instead of the full path, to find an image in its memory. Which one it resolves to when there are duplicates is a tossup.

Next time you post a material problem, please don't waste so much space showing the preview window. I can't read the details in your material, so I don't even know if I'm barking up the wrong tree here.

Renderosity forum reply notifications are wonky. If I read a follow-up in a thread, but I don't myself reply, then notifications no longer happen AT ALL on that thread. So if I seem to be ignoring a question, that's why. (Updated September 23, 2019)

I'll check for duplicate files.  Thanks!
And I wasn't able crop my preview because my Photoshop is on another machine that was being used.  So don't worry. The above was an exception to the rule.  All the materials were named as they should be.

One sure way of getting the desired texture to defeat the Poser memory cache is to change the image's name and then load it.

I did that.  A long time ago.  I named it:   Wedge2LtBrownNew.jpg and when I loaded it into the texture window it popped up in the transparency window as well.  I even took the original texture file completely off my computer and saved it to a CD so that only the "New" file was accesible.  I manually searched for the "New" file, loaded it, and it popped up in the transparency window.

Weird, huh?  Just to reiterate...if I remove the texture, the transparence map appears.  It also appears if I turn the transparency down to zero, but then the hair is invisible.  I also made sure that I had the display setting for the Document, Element, and Figure styles set to "Texture Shaded."

Oh, and it doesn't do this for all hair figures.  Just a few.

It's frustrating, but as I said it renders fine.  It's just annoying trying to pose and make expressions for figures with ghost hair.

You might check and see how things look in Daz Studio. I've found that some hair that Poser 7 insists on displaying as a thick-lined monochromatic cartoon shows up in Daz studio with textures and transparency.

Really? Wow.   I've never had that happen.  Well, I'd rather deal with semi-transparent hair than DAZ Studio...no offense meant to those who use it.  It's just that some of my figures won't transfer to DAZ Studio., I guess because they're so highly morphed with magnets and extra groups.

It's a bug in P7 and it does only happen with a few hair props. I've wrote to EF about it some month ago and got the reply that they knew about it and thought this bug has been eliminated with SR2.

Puntomaus,

Thanks for that information.  I think I will try installing SR2 again.

Puntomaus ( ) posted Thu, 15 November 2007 at 6:39 PM

That doesn't change a thing, it did not fix it :-( I was told they wanted to reopen the bug and fix it. I'm hoping for the next SR.

Yeah, I thought that maybe I forgot to install SR2, but I didn't.  I went ahead a installed it again, but ask you said, no change.
