Subject: Vector pen tool (Illustrator / Photoshop)

stephenbuck415 ( ) posted Thu, 15 November 2007 at 3:29 AM · edited Thu, 16 January 2025 at 2:30 AM

I'm using CS3 Extended.

I need to create a vector line with the pen tool.  Easy enough but I want the stroke width to vary.

At beginning point "A" I want it to begin as an actual point, like the head of a pin.  The approach towards end point "B" should grow to a greater width (10 pts for example) and then back to a single point like the head of a pin when it reaches point "B".

I can create this effect using two joined strokes with a fill but I would prefer to make this effect with a single stroke.

Is that possible with a single stroke?

In illustrator that would be easy, just draw the shape using the pen tool and drag to the brush pallet to create a new brush, that way you can add the new brush to any stroke and have the same effect....soory don't know how to do it in Photoshop.

Thank you.

hummm. interesting question. I usually use Illustrator for all my vector path stuff. only use the pen tool in PS when it's a simple "quick-and-dirty" request. not sure "how" you would go about it in PS.

my suggestion is to create a closed shape with a colour fill, but you've already done that...

let's see if anyone has a solution.

Is THIS what you had in mind? If not, lemme know and I'll try to come up with something else. Good luck - hope this helps- -Lew ;-)

JUust reread it again - based on the abov image, bend the handles (Alt key, grab a handle and move) of the BOTTOM point as well. You can move the handles around to give it any shape you want - including a wavy form that goes wide in the middle and back to a pointat both ends.

Good luck-

Hmmm.  Helpful but not quite what I'm seeking.

I'll try to rephrase my original question:

I can draw a line in Anime Studio Pro.  In the Fill tool panel is a tool called "Line Width (W)".

I can select that tool, place it over one point of the line/path just drawn, and vary the width of that point.

That's what I'm trying to do.

Take a look at Supergirls eye lashes:

They are wide at the base at the eye lid and extend to a sharp point.

I can create that effect in Anime Studio Pro with the Line Width tool using only a single stroke.

Does Adobe Illustrator have a similar tool?

AAAAhhhhhh!
An actual "stroke"... But Vector...

Bummer, I know how to do it bitmap (custom brushes in PS and Painter) but not in vector tools with Illustrator os PS...

I HAVE seen a tut on how someone made a varied stroke using a path in PS, but that was using the path as a guide and a regular brush for the width.

God, the only way I can think to do it vector would be to actually draw out the outlines of the "black" shapes you wanna fill - it would be easy to do, just more time consuming.

I guess I'll be waiting to see if someone comes up with a solution to this one myself.

turn the brush dynamics on... i think the bruh size can be set to fade from 100% size to 0% size to scale.. a simple two point line , last time i tried to do this - started thin, thickend up in the middle and thinned toward the end.  it may be possible to achieve the effect you want  by adjucting a frew settings..  oh   "stroke  path" is  under  one of the menu's.. tired sleepy...
Zzzzzzz
