Subject: What's a good 3D modeler for importing into Poser?

I'm interested in making some props and eventually some clothes & hair for use in Poser. What's a good inexpensive (under $500) modelling package for the PC I could use for this purpose? I've been trying unsuccessfully to find a vendor that still has copies of Ray Dream Studio or even Carrara. There are some cheap or free packages, but few support OBJ format. Anything available in the 3D modeling world these days that is low-priced and can do the things I'm looking for?

If you have a student ID you can get Rhinoceros 1.1 (NURBS 3D modeler)for less than USD 200. Check the Rhino forum here at Renderosity to see what's possible with Rhino.

I model in Truespace which I think will be within your budget. You may like to visit my site to see what that program can produce.

I have (and love) TrueSpace, and also recommend looking at 3D Canvas, another very powerful freeware package (see link). Cheers! Mark

Phil, do you have Truespace 4 or 5? I have 4 but haven't played with it much....just started learning Lightwave. Marque

I started with the free version 2, baught 4.3, upgraded to 5 and have just got but not installed 5.1. I think it:-- rocks (internet speak)

  • is jolly good (English)
  • is fair dincum (Ozzie)
  • c'est beaucoup dans le sliced oeuf (French sorta) smilie.gif

Phil - yes, Truespace looks like a good program and the price is reasonable. I looked at the specs and it cannot export OBJ format, which Poser needs (?), at least for Figures. How do you work around it? Also, I have heard of a program called Amapi - is it any good? Is it even a modeller? How about Inspire (scaled-down Lightwave)?

Thats a new one for me. Thanks corblet for adding your info drop here. 3D Canvas is one I've never heard of before. :) I was just looking for the same thing and checking out the ones PhilC mentioned to. :)

I do my COB to OBJ conversions using either the free Compose Utility or the reasonably priced 3DExplorer.

Strata 3d at 3d.com has everything you need for free. The pro version isn't necessary since it is used mostly to generate special FX.

personally i use lightwave. it's worth the bucks. if you're a student you can get it cheap. also you can get a competitive upgrade if you own aftereffects, or any one of a slug of graphics programs. competitive upgrade is $495 i believe

Hey folks... Thanks for all the info and the links! I will have to check them out. There's lots of stuff out there; I'm surprised at the variety of free modelers. Cool! I may end up with TrueSpace some day. For a "pro-sumer" (?) package the price is pretty good. Gotta check out the demo.
