Subject: How to post?

Hello, I am new and having a heck of a time. I have already posted a picture in the beginners image section. No problem. The problem is I have been trying to post a story in the writers section. I go the upload section and follow the steps. I change it to the writers gallery and for genre I choose story, but, sigh, I still get the same answer. My "image" is to large. Can anyone HELP!!!

Thanks, Livarts

ARTWITHIN ( ) posted Sun, 18 November 2007 at 1:26 PM

When you enter the genre as Writers, the size of the images allowed is shown under the box for your image file, on both the image and the thumb boxes.  The Writers gallery uses a different size for the images.  Your image must be within the size parameters, the system will not convert your image to the allowable size.

Writers gallery image size:  min 100 x 100 / max 450 x 450 @ 512 kb for this gallery section

*Writers gallery thumnail:     min 100 x 100 / max 200 x 200 @   15 kb for this gallery section

Another area you want to pay attention to is on what side of the gallery window you want your image to appear, left or right?

Many who post stories must do so in chapters. Try that if all else fails. Keep me posted, I love reading new writers. BJ

Ok. I give up. As much as I want to share EVERYTIME I try to submit and upload I get the same results. My image is to large, it does not fit the 100 x 100----400 x 400 image guidelines. I have tried to upload 2 lines of 24 words and still get the same message. Any more ideas?

ARTWITHIN ( ) posted Sat, 24 November 2007 at 7:12 PM

Are you trying to upload your story in the image box, by any chance?  If so, only an image can go in that box and must be the size specified.  You can have the system generate a thumb, if you choose.  I believe there is a check box for that.

Your story must be entered in the Comment box further down the page.  You can copy and paste it into the box.

If you have no image, leave it blank, and just put your story in the comment box.  You can have the system generate a thumb, if you choose.  I believe there is a check box for that.

After you upload the story, you can edit it if you need to.  The edit button is on the your gallery page for the story.

Don't give up.  You will get it up, it just takes a little time to get used to the way it is done.

I really am thankfull for all the help. Can you walk me through this from the top? I go to the upload page and in gallery I choose writers. Then I go--half way down to where it says Notes? I tried typing in there and was able to write but when I tried to preview I was told to convert to a jpg., etc. file. I also could not get it to copy and paste there. So, I'm thinking I have the wrong place. I didn't find anything marked Comments.

I only hope that my wiritng will be worth your time.

Thanks again. Deb

Hi Deb,

First, I apologize for using the word "Comments".  You went to the correct box titled "Notes/Caption".  Next, I wouldn't use "Preview", in my experience it causes more problems that it's worth.  You can always edit your upload from your gallery.

Now, from the top:

**Category: ** Select Writer's
Genre:  Select the genre that fits the subject of your work
Select an image to upload:  Leave blank if you have no image
Select a thumbnail (optional):  Leave blank if you have no thumbnail
Image Title:  Enter the title of your work
Notes / Caption:  Type your text, or copy and paste you text here. **
Comma-separated keywords to help identify this image in searching  ** Enter keyword(s) that fit the subject of your work, separated by a comma.
**Where the image should be placed within notes: ** Since you don't have an image, leave in the default position (Align left).  If you ever have an image, I recommend changing this to Align Right.
**How the image should be initially displayed (unless overridden by the viewer): ** Leave in default status.  No need to do anything here.
***Skip the Production Credits section

*****In the Permissions, Options and Advisories section you can uncheck the camera information box, but the second & third box is up to you.  If you want comments and a rating on your work, leave these boxes checked.

Select a content advisory for this image:  This is a mandatory box *** If your work has any violence or nudity (images), select all boxes that apply.  If there is none, you must select 'None'.*

** **I certify that this image is my property and abides by the site's terms of service on violence and nudity. ** You must check the box certifying your work.

Click Upload and Save, and wait until your work automatically appears on your gallery page.

I don't understand why the copy & paste doesn't work for you, I don't have that problem, but for now, go ahead and type your text.  I hope this all works for you now.  I would make one more suggestion that may have nothing to do with anything in your case, but as a precaution, clear your cache.

If you already tried to upload today using Preview, you might not be able to upload again until after 12:00 midnight CST.  That is one of the reasons I don't use it.

Good Luck, and reply here if it works or doesn't work.

Finally, I am making progress!!!!! I got it to copy and paste this time. The thing I get now is that I need to convert the text to a jpeg, bmp, etc. file. And if you haven't guessed by now I am relatively new at the computer---used it for writing but have not used the internet much. So, how do I do that, or does it need to be done?

You must be copying a document page, rather than the text.  Or you are trying, somehow, to paste a .doc file in the "Notes/Captions" box.  That won't work.

What you have to do is highlight your text by setting your curser in front of the first letter, then keeping the button down on your mouse, drag it across and down the page until all your words are highlighted. Then, lift your finger from the mouse, right click the anywhere on the highlighted text and a box will appear.  You select "copy", then 'paste' in the "Notes/Caption' box on the upload page.

You have to do this in one action, so have the Renderosity upload page ready to paste in.

If the text does't stay highlighted for you to copy it, you have repeat the action until you can get it to stay highlighted long enough to copy it.  Remember, after you lift your finger when you highlight, right click on it, any other clicks will remove the highlight from the text.

Keep trying.  We will get you uploaded yet.  I won't give up on you.  😄

I have tried moving one story from a .doc file to my notepad. It changed to a .txt file but I still got the "invalid image" message. I am going to write something new in the notepad and try again. I'll keep trying--maybe it is just that this story isn't ready yet.hehe.

If you won't give up---I won't!

OK, now I want you to tell me exactly what you are doing, in detail.  Please begin at the point you have your Word .doc oen.  Tell me exactly how you are copying the text from the .doc file.

Then, tell me exactly what you are doing to paste what you just copied into the "Notes/Caption" box.

Be specific, and don't leave anything out, no matter how basic it may seem to you.

One more thing.  The maximum word count allowed for an upload to the Writer's category is 25000 characters.  So, do a character count of your story in Word or whatever word processing program you use.  In MS Word go to Tools, then Word Count.  The box that opens will also give you a character cound, both with or without spaces.  You don't want to exceed 25000 characters with spaces.

If it is over 25000 characters, you will have to submit two or more uploads.  That means on separate days, unless you have purchased the package that allows 3 uploads on a single day.

If you need two uploads, you can time them so that one is a little before midnight CST, and the other is a little after midnight CST.

Hello Suzanne,

Well, I tried last night and again this morning. Last night I typed directly in the box after going the the upload page. I then put in writiers, science fiction (for the lack of a better genre), left the next two blank, wrote in the title, type in a short poem, left the next one blank, left the alignment in default, skipped the vendor thing, cleared the image info, choose the comments and none for nudity, violence and check the last box--it is mine. Hit upload and save  again received the message that it was an invalid image file and it needed to be converted to jpeg etc.

Then this morning I thought if it wants an image I will use the simple one that I posted in the Beginners gallery. I check the length and made sure it was only 28kb. So, I started the same way, writers, sci-fi, except this time I put the image in the thumbnail spot, title, copied the story line by line and pasted it in Notes and Captions, used two words in the next box, aligned it right, skipped the vendors, left the image box, etc. Hit upload and save----got the same message.

There has to be something I'm not doing right---I thought I may have the wrong page but that can't be. It has to be a simple thing I'm missing. It really can't be this difficult.

Thanks, Deb

Hi Deb,  ;-)  Good try!

Did you clear your cache?  In Firefox it is in Tools...Clear Private Data.  In Internet Explorer it is called Temporary Internet Files.  When I have loaded an image incorrectly, I have to clear my cache for it to take a new image (or none at all).  It is the same for both images and thumbnails.  But you don't have to have a thumbnail for it to show with the other new images.

The error message you are getting has something to do with an image, so I think you will need to clear your cache to clear out whatever you may have put in that image box in the beginning.  Your initial error message was that the image was too large, so I assumed you pasted your text document in the image box.  That is still there unless you cleared your cache.

Otherwise, everything looks OK to me.  In your initial try to skipped the keyword, but you corrected that in the second try, so that wasn't the problem.  You only need to put in one word and no comma if you want to make it simple for this first Writer's submission.  There always has to be at least one keyword in that box.

Give clearing the cache a try and if that doesn't work, I will try to get someone from administration to take a look and contact you with any suggestios.  I'm just about out of ideas here.  I still think it is your cache, but I could be wrong.  Clear your cache before you do any filling in of the boxes.  I sure hope this will solve the problem.  Good Luck!

Hugs and a smile,
Suzanne

I just want to let you know that I finally gave up. I did the things you suggested and still get the same message about turning it into a jpeg, etc. file. I try again when I think about in hopes that maybe someday it will allow me to post. I have no problem with posting pictures. The program just won't let post a story. So I went to writing.com and if your interested in reading a quick one I post look for oldmanschild.

Do want to thank you, Suzanne, you hung in there til the bitter end. You are a great person!!!!

Thanks again, Deborah

I am going to try something here---I just that maybe I could attach a file----I'll give it a shot----what can it hurt?

Hi Deborah,

I'm sorry, it didn't work for you.  I didn't mention it before, mainly because it doesn't effect me with my work, but there is a word count limit.  Don't know if that cause any of your problem.  Sorry if I missed it at the time we were going through this.

I was able to download your .doc file, so we know that works.  I don't know if some people would have a problem with download it due to virus vulnerability.   However, I didn't have any issue and it worked for me.

You could copy the text into this window, if it isn't too big.   The other option would be to post it in your Blog space.

Well, I understand your frustration.  We gave it a good effort.  I just feel bad that I could not have a solution for you.

Warm Regards,
Suzanne
