Tutorials 27 and 32 deal with building materials.
I've been looking at the G@P tutorials all day. That's where I learned enough to get as far as I did.
I just finished watching #27, and I think my brain exploded. That's far beyond what I can understand right now. (Of course, I've just spent about 17 hours straight playing with Vue, so I may be critically in need of a nap.)
They had chained him down to things that are, and had then
explained the workings of those things till mystery had gone out of
the world....And when he had failed to find [wonder and mystery] in
things whose laws are known and measurable, they told him he lacked
imagination, and was immature because he preferred dream-illusions
to the illusions of our physical creation.

Yeah, don't overload! Gotta pace yourself!
Vue includes some nice building materials in the Special Effects, building folder. The ones shown as cubes in the library will of course work best on cubes. There are some for cylinders and spheres.
I also highly recommend all of the modules and building packs from GeekatPlay. Great stuff and really nice priices.

you gotta take breaks every now and then - I don't even think I could spend 17hrs straight on Vue :) (My wife would kill me for starters)

Yeah, one of the joys and terrors of being a freshly-divorced freelance artist. Mine time is utterly my own, with the caveat that no one's going to stop me if I make my time utterly my own :)
I just keep telling myself that this'll be useful to my biz (commercial photographer) once I get good at it.....

I sure amire your youthful tenacity. However, don't use up all of your energy now, you will have plenty of time to feel tired when you get old!?!
One of the ways you can add a little drama to your building is to add some extra lighting, maybe a soft spot light in the right areas to bring out the window texture. Perhaps something like a soft point light inside the building behind the window. Often glass and liquid textures need a little encouragement from extra lighting to display their best qualities.
Feh. It's the mileage, not the years.

Good suggestion, keenart. I probably would have added some additional lighting sources, if I hadn't been so stir crazy from lack of sleep...
The question for me now is whether to continue working on this same piece, or to start on a new project.

Well as an artist you know the routine, if it doesn’t work, throw it in the corner and wait until it does!
I do that a lot, start something and run into a glitch, go on to another project. Later something clicks I get an idea then go back and maybe fix it or just do it new all over again.
Vue is not that easy to absorb all in one night, even if you are familiar with 3D.
You are doing well, just give yourself some time, and in this Forum ask questions when your back is against the wall. There is a bunch of Vue talent here on the Forum and they can help.
Practice makes perfect, of course aided with a lot of good Columbian Supremo coffee.

soooooo true, keenart grins (and, like you, i tend to toss my 'glitches' into a corner and leave 'em to gather dust & webs while somewhere in the back of my mind, i try to sort through the glitch - i may or may not return to the original when i get it worked out LOL)
and amul - the vue forum folks ARE wonderful helps =D good luck with your windows! =D

I can't seem to figure out how to make buildings look like they have windows. When I tried applying one of of the textures that seemed to work, the texture was curved, instead of square. They had chained him down to things that are, and had then explained the workings of those things till mystery had gone out of the world....And when he had failed to find [wonder and mystery] in things whose laws are known and measurable, they told him he lacked imagination, and was immature because he preferred dream-illusions to the illusions of our physical creation.
