Okay this has nothing to do with photography but I don't know where else to ask it.

Is it common practive to get a 13th cheque in December?

I'm personally salaried and received pay direct into the bank on 24th of every month except in December, they pay it in a week or two early to give us chance to use it for Christmas shopping etc.

I would have thought that the only logical way to receive a 13th cheque/payment in December is if you are paid 4-weekly, in which case there are 13 payments in a year.

That's my theory anyway, but I don't know for sure I'm afraid - let's just hope you get what money you've earned and paid when you need it!!

Okay well I just assumed that this country gives out 13th cheques at Xmas as a gift from the company.

In SA we get a double salary in Dec and the extra is a 'present'?13th cheque from the company to say thank you for being with them for a year.

I agree with bibby, I take it ya and so good for my account LOL... This present is like to show you the good work form the compagny and you can considering that like the performance bonus and the production bonus.

Look in "The payment of bonuses" in the links.

I think a lot of places give out a christmas bonus - not really a 13th pay-cheque but probably the same if you think about it.

Well I kinda get one as I get paid every 4 weeks so I get paid twice in December. But as far as xmas goes we get absolutely nothing - no bonus, no xmas party, not even a thank you for all the hard work over the last year. 😠

I always thought that a 13th month payment is a certified right... at least here in Belgium.
Some companies even give a 14th month as a bonus or Christmas present.

Yep, I looked it up: about 90% of all employees in Belgium legally benefit from a 13th month's payment. Only downside is that there are some 50% taxes on that payment...
My former employer also payed us a '14th month': an annual share in the company's profits... That is, until our company was taken over by an American company; they sacked 4000 employees in Europe and kept the profits...

Yip that's what happens in SA, everyone gets a 13th cheque and it is heavily taxed (45%) for us, but you get some of it back whn you do your tax return plus it really helps to pay off debts or buy Xmas pressies. I was really relying on getting a 13th cheque or bonus to use on my trip to Europe. Now I think I'm not gonna have such a great time coz I gotta watch my money...

That is happening everywhere..Then the jobs are moved to a country where workers are paid next to nothing..

They call that a global economy..

"They call that a global economy.."

Depends on who 'they' are.
And a very one-sided 'global' economy, if you ask me...

Yip all the jobs are going to Indian and The Philaphines, which is great for those countries.

Only problem is they are on a totally different time zone, services levels actually drop and products aren't any better. So what happens? Well as Nestle SA and SAB Miller in South Africa discovered is that it doesn't work. They lost billions in the 1st year alone of this 'miracle' outsourcing. They have since started to gain perm employees in the country again...

In the long run it's going to cause serious serious problems for the economies and this credit card thing is just the start. You want want want but all the work is outsourced and if you have a job you are now trying to live on a salary in a 1st world country that can only support a 3rd world's living costs... Go figure. But then we have ourselves to blame too. We want want want ... higher salaries and cheaper products, somethings got to give and the easiest for the companies to do is cut salaries. The problem is the products don't drop in price and you are left in a catch 22 while the fat cats get even fatter. I think the class gap is getting even bigger even faster than ever. Soon this false economy in the outsourced countries is going to catch up with them as well. As the one big thing that keeps 3rd world countries 3rd world is there world debt and the government greep and power hungry attitudes...

But this conversation could go on forever!

I have never heard of this practice, I worked for Local Government and they paid you as little as possible, we used to get paid on the 15th of the month, two weeks behind two weks in front.  It was paid into the bank, if payday landed on a weekend(Sat/Sun) we got paid on the Friday before.  I was retired due to health two years ago, my pension is paid into the bank on the first of the month now. One month in front.
