Subject: What's with all the exclamation points (!) in Poser?

cujoe_da_man ( ) posted Sun, 09 December 2007 at 11:50 AM · edited Mon, 23 December 2024 at 3:38 AM

I've only been using Poser for about a year and a half now, and one thing that bugs the hell outta me is the amount of folders that begin with an exclamation point... or two, or three... some spaced out, some not, etc.  Does anyone know why the merchants do this?

Anthanasius ( ) posted Sun, 09 December 2007 at 11:57 AM

LOL !!!

The exclamation point is for the character or the props files you download was the first of the list ...

! before a or b or c ...
!! before !
!!! before !!

etc etc ...

Blame DAZ.  Everyone else does. ;)

Seriously though, DAZ did it first with the INJ/REM folders when V3 was launched.  Back then, Poser could only see 256 folders in one library section.  Beyond that, they disappeared.  DAZ needed a way to ensure their folders were at the top of the pile.  Everyone else jumped on the bandwagon, which kinda negated the idea.

Poser doesn't need it now, since there's no apparent limit of the number of viewable folders.  Some merchants insist on keeping the format, though.  It bugs the hell out of me and, good guy that I am, I don't use it on any of my stuff.

It's one of the major annoyances with Poser items that people have been complaining about for years. Back before Poser 5 and mutiple runtimes and nested folders, Poser 4 could only show one runtime and no nested folders so it loaded up pretty fast. Folks used !!! Marks and what not to bring their items to the top of your runtime so you didn't have to page down forever to get to them. Now a days with nested folders and multiple runtimes, any merchant who does that finds his or her items less likely to be purchased due to the annoyance factor. Doesn't stop some of them though.

The only folder that I leave the ! on is the !Daz folder.  I rename all of the ones inside the main library character, pose, props etc folders.

I tend to organize some things by "theme" inside my runtimes, such as "shoes" and "jewellery" and "purses". Or inside my props runtime such as "music", "vases", "magic", "weapons" etc.  In those cases I put an ! at the beginning of the folder name so that they stay at the top of the pile for easier locating.

Khai ( ) posted Sun, 09 December 2007 at 2:21 PM

the only use I've found is within a product folder, so the main file is at the top eg runtime/character/Khai-Crypt for the folder and !Crypt for the main file within that folder so the user knows which to load first.

cyberscape ( ) posted Sun, 09 December 2007 at 3:06 PM

As others have stated, using !!!'s is a great way to organize your most used folders and keep them near the top of the dropdown menus. As for vendors "abusing" this idea (shrug), I generally rename folders as part of my install routine. No biggie.

I don't think you should remove them from the !!!texture file though. I could be wrong.

Well, you can if you want Poser to throw a fit every time you try to load a MAT.  Great fun.  :)

If you change textures that have that, then you need to hack the Mat's to make the same changes there.

Personally, I blame the store management. If they would just BAN using it to keep main folders at the top, we would not have this thread every few months. I don't know why the PTB have not put a stop to it when it P__s's so many users off.

I think the only time it should be allowed is like Khai suggested. Inside the main folder to keep the files organised.

cujoe_da_man ( ) posted Sun, 09 December 2007 at 4:17 PM

sorry for not knowing this thread ets posted every few months, I tried a search, but didn't exactly find what I was looking for, but at least I know now :D

*Well, you can if you want Poser to throw a fit every time you try to load a MAT.  Great fun.  :)

*;p OK. I'll  say it then,,, Do NOT change the texture and geometry file names(unless you know how).  I see people asking why poser searches for everything,, once in a while...

..shudders... I had 38,000 orphaned texture files after my last crash...pause... "Please locate black.jpg"... pause...

I'm better now. really

Tashar59 ( ) posted Sun, 09 December 2007 at 4:43 PM

Don't be sorry, we need these threads to flair up more often and maybe something might be done about it. I doubt it will get resolved, maybe to many of the better selling merchants have told the PTB that they will sell elsewhere. The only reason I can see why it has not been stopped. But one can always hope.

If I find the vendor that put the "!" before his/her texture files, I am going to find all the "!''s he/she used and stick them up his/or her "TOS"

ok, so then that means (in theory of course) that I could change the folder names of the figures and props... as long as I don't change their source folders with the geometries?  Or did that stupid train just run right over me again? :P

XENOPHONZ ( ) posted Mon, 10 December 2007 at 12:46 AM

About the only folders that I leave in their default locations are the DAZ folders.  The reason for this being that most character packages / etc. go looking for the various DAZ files in their defaults.

Otherwise, I reorganize pretty much everything.

I copy all geometry and texture folders into the main Poser 7 root runtime.  The library files I move to any external runtime that I choose.

Python scripts have to be located in the root runtime directory, too.

Yes, you can change the main folder name of them all, except geometry and textures and materials.

In P4, we use to get around the folder limit by changing pose files (pp2) to Camera files (cm2) and store them in the camera folders. I still have a bunch of stuff in my old runtime that has them there. One day I'm going to have to change them back and place them in thier proper place. Some day. LOL.
