Subject: Uploading freebies

I'v made a texture, it works in Poser. I'v made the 'runtime' and have everything except the 'readme's and the Renderosity thingy. Now I know I read a tutorial on it somewhere, but don't know where. Anyone able to help me?

What do you want to know? How to zip it?

Yes... I would love to know how to 'zip', but don't I need to put a 'readme' into it first? I thought I had read somewhere that there was a standard one that you just downloaded and then changed what you needed to do. Otherwise, I guess I'm going to have to copy one from one of the downloads I have.

O.K.. I think I'v done a 'readme' so now I think I'm ready to 'upload' my first every freebie. Do I need to 'zip' or can I just upload the folder?

I'v just tried to search the tutorials for something on 'zips', but using the search button.... it comes up with a blank page, even though it says that there is 20 pages. Is there a trick to finding tuts. other than going through the whole lot?

I offered up information on zipping files in this thread, maybe it will help you...

there's a 'stock readme' file in Freebies, or there was. Most of the legal folderal, etc.

to make friends
include contact info
say what it is, or what it's for
and what, if any, restrictions you have on the item

I have made the 'zip' file. I tried to upload it, 1) couldn't put it into my home page. 2) started to upload it but couldn't find where to upload it. 3) couldn't give the URL address as I couldn't upload the file. I know this is probably a basic question, but as much as I enjoy making pictures and now.. making textures.... I am really computer 'dumb'. I'm hoping that someone can help me get to the next stage. PLEASE.....

OK, you need two things:

  1. A software which runs on Mac and can make zips or .rar files
  2. Somewhere to upload the file

OK so you say you made the zip - what program did you use? Stuff-It? Is it one which will allow Windows users to open it okay?

For file hosting - I would suggest you check out sharecg.com - they offer free hosting and if your item gets enough downloads they even pay you a small amount (based on share of advertising revenue).

I made the 'zip' by right clicking and it came up with something like 'do you want to archive this'. When I sais yes, it made a 'zip' the same sort as when you sometimes download something. I have no idea if 'window' can open it.... how can I get someone to check it for me? O.K. once I have all this worked out, I'll go over to sharecg. and see what I have to do there. Thank you for answer, as you can see, everything is one step at a time. But I do keep note of everything, so I shouldn't have to ask again. LOL

Once you get the item uploaded over at ShareCG, they will give you a link for the download..you can send it to me via IM/Sitemail here, and I will check it for you, then will walk you thru uploading it here into freestuff if you like :)

Hi Jumpstartme2, I'v downloaded it at ShareCG. and I'v also managed to download it here. However, I still don't know if it will work in windows, so I'll still send it through to you and you can tell me if it works. Gosh... I hope it does...... I'm just about all 'computered out'. LOL
