Subject: Anyone got a coyote pic?

TomDart ( ) posted Thu, 13 December 2007 at 8:00 PM · edited Mon, 25 November 2024 at 11:21 AM

Around here, coyotes are just starting to be a problem for farmers but these pretty animals are not liked at all by the cattle and sheep farmers.  Some use donkeys as the best deterrent.  Donkeys get really aggressive and go after the coyote.

Doe anyone have a picture of a wild coyote?

I had a chance to get one photo but got a nice turkey shot instead.  This critter was close, about 40 feet away. But I missed the shot in shadows.

Coyotes range from Alaska to Central America and among the variations of the species I would still call this "prairie wolf" as something much larger than a fox and smaller than a wolf.  Around here, these are loners and not in packs.  I am more fearful of feral dogs than a coyote but do respect all wild creatures and give them the room they deserve.
( We pronounce the name like this: ki-oat,  long "i" an oat as in oats, the grain.)

Just a shot in the dark..got that picture? If so, plese let me know.      TomD'Art.

**Here's  one I took a while  back,  it's a young coyote pup. These pups were really playful. I know it's not the fierce image you might have been looking for, but I was happy to catch him in the daylight.**

iDont. I do know that a mule can kill a Coyote. Some call them koh-yo-tee or kah-yo-tee.

They are a big problem here in Va where I live.  They have killed all the ground hogs that use to have burrows in the pastures and hay fields.  Rabbits are getting scarce.  They do run in small groups here in the winter.
Riding the Interstate and Hwy 11 you can see dead ones now the same as dead deer kill.  We have a bounty on them.  I forget what that is.
Will watch and see if can grab you a pic.  My son has a farm with all kind of wild life on it. :)

I didn't know they had made it strong in VA.  Nongo, that is a neat pic and a view of the animal most will not see. Thanks.

As for pronunciation, seems this is an Americanized word of Spanish/French creole origin.

I generally say the word woth the  e at the end but lots of locals leave it off.

I got one a couple of weeks ago, Tom.  This one was searching the shallow marshes for food and the bits of white are feathers from the cranes and geese.

They are afraid of man but may mistake a child for food.

Here's one, Tom. I got this guy in Jasper NP in the Canadian Rockies in August, 2005. I had just ruined his breakfast. He'd been chasing some little critter alongside the road, and when I stopped it distracted him, and breakfast got away. He hung around long enough for me to get a few shots.

I had just closed "rosity and then saw the ebot...nice shot..Thanks for this one. Appreciated.

You got a nice expression on the face of this coyote. When in full winter coat, they are very pretty animals, despite the trouble some folks have with coyotes.   Tom.
