There are a lot of freestuff too that can be used not just what is in the marketplace. I have a large inventory for models etc but I use them more then once and play with mix and match. So start out slow and then build as you can afford. Use your imagination and mix and match.

Daz Studio is a free 3D program and now you can get V3 etc for free..thats a start..you can come here to the free stuff to get clothes and hair and by the time you learn to use the free stuff you may change your mind and decide that buying something you want is a good idea. :D

You must considering the time does take to make some stuff. That is why there is such a difference of prices in the store. I'm working on a project from two months, daily. Like me, many others do the same way. Unique projects requires a lot of time. But when you look in the market that is what does make you saying: WOW. There's much to study about the 3D, and Poser is so hard for shaders... that only does require so long time (imagine to change each time a shader, render it to see the result, change the value, rendering again and so going on and on until you get the wanted result), more the hard work to create. I understand your feeling though, because when i started I was thinking right the same you are. And I was also thinking that best renderings were those having the most expensives items (Aery Soul, sample). That too is not true. I laters have seen how many people are able to do wonderful pieces of arts without the use of nothing expensive.

While it can add up VERY quickly, like those above you can save a lot of money by using freestuff and re-using/mixing up textures, props and figures. This requires some learning and spending time to do so, but in the end you'll save money and end up with a more unique look to your gallery than those who use 3d products "out of the box".
The strong do as they can while the weak do as they must.
expensive hobby you say. Well it may seem that way at first but if you budget and put money away it wont take long to get a few items for you to use.
Now since i started with 3d graphics back in the days of bryce 5 and D|S 1. whatever, i have spent plenty on getting the things i wanted..this is no way an expensive hobby, my radio communication hobby is 5 times what you would spend on this grear...1 radio $800AUD, 1 Antenna $300AUD, cable for that $13.95AUD per meter(3 foot), 2 connectors $27.00AUD.
To repar or replace anything in that hobby can cost from $5 upwards...so no this is far from being an expensive hobby...if you can't afford something straight away then wait till you can
I have opinions of my own -- strong
opinions -- but I don't always agree with them.
It becomes far cheaper with Daz studio and freestuff items . If you can paint then making your own textures and transparency maps expands your existing models a lot. Several paint programs free. There are even free modelling programs if you want to make some simple props.
Join Daz platinum club and buy stuff at $1.99 .
For the amount of money I spend and the time I can occupy with it , its not that expensive a hobby.

i love the renderosity website, and i look through the gallery every day. i often think to myself, wow what a cool image ,id like to do somthing like that. but then i tally up all the prices of models, hair, etc etc and one picture could cost £30.(im from england sorry) i understand model artists need to make a profit and i am all for that aswell as renderosity need their profit aswell, but i am only suggesting that if it was more affordable ,more people would take part which = high turnover and small profit.in the long run i think more money would be made if it was made more affordable.only a suggestion but i can imagine how many people do not want to part with that amount of money to make a picture and it will end up lost amongst all the other art work. or maybe have more competitons on differnt skill levels and people vote, and the winner gets gift vouchers or something. just suggestions which may make this site turn over even more profit and more people can enjoy what it has to offer :)
