Is Carrara 6 backward compatible for stuff created for C-4, C-5?

Yes everything works fine in C6, just dont try to open things done in C6 in other version, even shaders dont work.

UV mapper in C6pro had some problems with items mapped in C5pro.  They were okay, but I had to do a lot of clicking through a warning pop-up first.

Otherwise, no problems opening old models.  Haven't tried a scene yet.

Oh, I know about the bug tracker.  (I've had bugs in there for years. ) Before I have to send this one in I have to understand thorougly why it appears, when it apears, and if it was intended as a feature.  Probably a full day.  Of unpaid work.  So it may be a while before that happens.
