Hi all, I am creating a lot of 3d illustrations in Poser for use in Photoshop and ultimately for web and print. Currently my workflow is render over a background or color, but I sure would like to render onto a transparent layer, or figure out hot to export a render in Poser so I can just drag it into a Photoshop layer and not have to worry about edge editing. How do you all do it? thx...

a render on a transparent back ..just save it as a PNG...

I render over "Black" and then save as a .png.  .png files are "lossless" and when saved in Poser have a trasparent alpha channel so when opened into your graphic program has "no background" to worry about.

Rendering over black will prevent an edge border of your background colour, that results from automatic antialising.  

A couple of years ago I was having terrible issues with an ugly grey (my render background) border around the edges of my figure.  It turns out that it was the result of antialising.  It was suggested to me to render over a black background.  That solved my ugly border problem.  The black still produces an antialis border, but it looks more  like a shadow than a border.

My only exception to this rule is if I'm rendering something that is mostly white IE: wedding dress.  Then I notice the black border. So in those cases I render over white and any antialing that happens is the colour of the dress so it's not noticable.

I usually render over the background I am going to use--THEN save as PNG. Drag it over holding the shift key down to place it in the exact same spot  (snap too)  :)  That way the anti alias matchs when you compose the layers

I'm pretty sure that with P7 the anti-aliasing problem with the alpha channel has been solved, since it saves the pngs according to standard.

thanks all for the great info! i am working on this image and having a clean transparent png will allow me to move it around at will during the editing process... ps. if anyone has tips on making DAZ animals look right, they would be appreciated. The lions mane looks like plastic and his fur is screwed. The monkey looks flat but that may be the lighting. The zebra is okay but i had to brush out strange reflections there. Is it the quality of the product, or the ineptness of the user? thx...

Hi All, I'm new to this forum and also new to poser (mines in the post heading my way). I do a lot of work in Photoshop and have a similar question. Is it possible to import a photographic image, say Tiff Eps or Jpeg into Poser to use as a backdrop to the figure you are composing? I figured this may be useful when creating figures that will be subsequently dropped onto the same shot. You could get the pose, lighting, angle and perspective 'spot on' before exporting. This Forum Does Rock btw! Thanks

About the Lion. Unfortunately the stock P4 Lion is not the best mapped. Depending on budget and amount of realisim two alternatives are the BigFace Lion from http://www.3dmenagerie.com/, free, Or the MilBig Cat set from daz3d.com not free

Some of those models you are using for your sign are a bit old, and many people have newer better made models with excellent textures that can be even better with tweaking the textures in the material editor (that is if you are only working in Poser), if you can spare some cash on them.  Sharen

File:Import:Background Picture should do the trick, though IIRC it wants to resize your preview window to match the dimensions of the picture, not a necessary thing, but it will leave empty space around the background.

Yes shiva22 :)

File--->Import--->Background Picture

Let it resize your screen to match the BG size, this will get you the proper proportions. Resize it down (Window--->Document window size)  from there to fit your screen and comfort level :)

When you render,  render (Render--->render options--->New window) at the same size as your BG. The bigger the better.. When your picture is finally finished and all merged, you can reduce it's overall size to print or upload. The shrinking process makes the anti alias 'blend' in seemlessly.

Nick, very helpful! But I can't make heads or tails, pardon the pun, out of BigfaceLion, as it seems to be based on something called P4 Lion, which I don't think I have in Poser 7 for mac. I do have Zygote Animals (which I thought was part of DAZ animals purchased). Bigface lion apparently needs the Poser4 obj, as when I remapped the DAZ lion with the bigface texture, some of it fits, some parts do not. MilCat looks grand on the website, but my gosh 40usd for a lion! I could buy a real one here in nepal for that price. Well, almost...the one in our only zoo looks pretty sad and would probably go cheap. Hmmm..so what to do?

coocooFORcocoapuffs, The P4 lion is the old zygote lion. Look under your zygote folder, geometries, lion, and see if you have a file called blLion.obj. Can't remember if the BFlion was encoded or only needed UVMapper to set it up. You can get a free MAC version of UVMapper at. As far as the MilBig Cats and the price, you get more than just the lion.

thanks nick! I already have UVMAPPER PRO on the oc side of this map, my partner said I would need it someday, although I have never used for anything else then looking at .obj files. So what do I do with that and the zygote lion? I do have that file you mentioned. Do I somehow use that in UVMAPPER and apply the BigFaceLion texture map? ur helps is really appreciated!

Yes, you will need UVMapper. Instead of me confusing you, the instructions on how to set up the BFL are in the zip file. It's pretty simple.

Nick, et. all: well before I could "learn" UV mapping (that readme file is just gorp to me) I just discovered that a pc here does have Millennium Big Cat package installed, this is an animal welfare agency that has been around for years...so I made sure that all the runtime files were there (checked against pack list) and loaded it up to create a lion, and while the texture mapping is much better ( I guess) there is no Mane! And as with most DAZ productions, there is not much help in the readme file. So above is what I got, a male lion with no mane looking pretty silly. I guess I should google this one? Thanks!

There should be a mane figure somewhere, it's supposed to be included in the product.

The MilBig Cat does come with a mane. It is a seperate figure that has to be loaded and conformed. There also should be poses for it. Not sure where P7 put the folder, but here is what it would look like under PPP.

Aw jeez, the MillBigCatsLIST.txt does not list those files, and is dated 10/14/2004. I guess there must have been an update, but hard to believe there was a mane-less lion. Not to be sexist, but that sucks. Now what to do? I guess I can complete this comp with a female lion or maybe a male puma, but it wouldn't be the same... ps. Nick, on your Indian Saddle icon, why do you have that goofy guy? A lot of my icons are like that on this mac, but I don't ever remember seeing him on a pc. Is this some sorta mac/pc icon problem? Well, thanks so much for you help everyone ...it really helps!

The "shrugging man" means that there isn't a .png thumbnail image to show.  You can fix that by making a render of the item at a size of 91x91 pixels and saving it to that library folder as a .png file with the same name as the file the .png is for. In that case "Indian Saddle.png"

Thanks for explaining Shrugging Man, Acadia. I'm pretty bad at experimenting and not going back and making a proper thumb. you do not want to see my pose folder :) Back to the Mane problem: coocooFORcocoapuffs, look under you Daz, Animals, geometry folder, and see if you have the blLionMane.obj. If it is not there, locate the original .sit file for the package and install it to a dummy folder and check. If not there, you will have to have to get the file reset at Daz and redownload.

From what you've not found, a redownload is the best bet. My records show the package has been upgraded, fixed the mane plus a few other things.
