Subject: Why the lack of contests?

ccbig ( ) posted Wed, 23 January 2008 at 8:09 AM · edited Sun, 24 November 2024 at 12:54 AM

With the huge number of talented Poser artists and venders why is there such a glaring lack of contests for the Poser format? I would like to see many more contests for Poser each month. Contest suggestions- Vender contest- A contest to promote items for a particular figure. clothing, characters or particular theme etc. Maybe this could be used as a way to get more items available for figures like SP3 and the M3 and David figures who seem to have a glaring lack of support compared to the V3, V4, A3 figures. Monthly freebie contest- Very much like the Vender contest but items or characters would be available as freebies. (Perhaps at least for a specific minimum limited time) Again making the items or clothing for specific figures or for a particular theme. Best image of the month Poser genres sub theme contest- With the huge number of Poser image photo sub genre galleries why not have a few monthly contests that highlight different genres? I am sure other people have contest suggestions! ccbig (Cully)

We use to do that-- a lot

But it's against the forum rules now.

I'll give ya an example-
I need a new top Banner for my site. We use to be able to post a little forum challenge and give away one of our store products as a prize.
Not anymore!
It has to be in the contest forum and is too big a hastle and time comsuming to get it all set up ect....
To formal and far to tightly regulated.

Probably because the contest threads are moved to the contest forum that no one looks at and therefore it dies a slow and agonizing death!

Back when they allowed contests to be posted in the forum that they were for, you saw more people posting contest announcements and more people entering them.

I found out first hand that it's now against the rules for people to even posts links in the Poser forum letting people know of existing contests. A while ago I saw a contest in the contest forum that looked fun. I posted a link here pointing people to that thread and encouraging them to get involved. The thread was deleted and I was told to not do that anymore.  Yet not long after that I saw a different mod post a link in the freebie forum pointing people to a  contest  that was posted in one of the modeling forums (not the contest forum).   😕  I can't see how that was any different than what I did, yet it was against the rules for me, but not for them.

So now when I see a contest on another site, I can't let anyone know about it other than in PM, which I think is a real shame.

When I say Vender contest, I do not mean sponsored by a vender but a contest for venders (or potential venders) to compete against each other. Are you saying that also is against the rules?

They still have to be posted in the contest forum, where no one ever looks.

All contest should be able to be viewed from the Rendo home page by clicking the "Open Contest" link. IF that page became to cluttered there could always be a link from there to the Poser contest forum area. Rules are fine but I worry when the rules seem to stifle growth. If the contests are dying from lack of being found this would be a good way to attract the attention. Contests could also be promoted in the newsletters.

There is a tiny link in the forum preamble at the top of the page.  But it's small and the text is the same colour as the rest of the paragraph, so it's difficult to see.

I am referring to the Rendo home page. When I click from there to "open contests" I am sent to page- http://www.renderosity.com/mod/contest/index.php?browse&open On that page there is 2 Bryce specific, 1 Fractal, 4 Terragen, 2 Vue and a few other odds and ends contests. None of these are Poser specific. Here there are not even links to where someone could find a Poser contest. Promotion is needed for both having contests and where to find them!

CBig -  would you like to organise one ?

While I've often found the take up on contests a liitle low, I do think these can be fun - it's always interesting to see how other artists interperet the "brief".

So if you did one I'd happily chip some bits, and if you ask nicely other folks might help as well. Though you'd have to run this yourself as I'm pretty time poor at the moment.

Pinky - you left the lens cap of your mind on again.

I have not run a contest but I would be willing to try if I could have help from other artists. I think it would also be important to have help from Rendo itself in the form of links and promotion. I don't know where to begin but I am motivated to get the ball rolling!

Hey Cully....great minds think alike.  I just posted on a different thread about wanting to see a contest for all artists...to help create more handsome male faces/heads to sell in the marketplace.

It's at the bottom of this thread... http://www.renderosity.com/mod/forumpro/showthread.php?thread_id=2727937

I'll help you if we promote a contest  for handsome hunk characters to be created for sale...(you know I'd help you anyway, even for a different sort of contest...but give it some thought. )  LOL

I have asked for more information about getting something going. Thank you Robin for offering to help! Are there other people interested in helping with a contest too? Thank you dphoadley for the prize offering! Other prize offerings would be be helpful too if other folks would like to pitch in with the same spirit! Cully

Hey, I'll help judge. This way it will be chosen by what is done and not by who did it. LOL.

mrsparky ( ) posted Thu, 24 January 2008 at 4:53 PM

Cully - I'll ask in the vendor forum for you - that might drum some interest up.

one tip on contests involving artists submitting renders in a competition:
if any stipulation by the contest holder requires that he receive all rights to any submiited
images (in regard to publishing, sale, redistribution etc.), this may have a severe
dampening effect on said contest, as it will appear as if the contest holder is merely
trying to get alotta free images for later resale.

ccbig ( ) posted Fri, 25 January 2008 at 7:39 PM

Thank you for that input Miss Nancy. I wouldn't want to run a contest with that being a goal. The contests I envision would be about promoting more products and useful items for us all here. A way to show the creative talents of our venders and artists. I still have not heard back yet from the mod I messaged for information. hopefully I will hear something soon,

Faery_Light ( ) posted Sat, 26 January 2008 at 6:13 PM

This contest idea seems like something that would definately help promote our products.
If you get it going sometime after Feb. 29, when my entire store goes back off sale, I may donate one of my products to the contest. :)

i'll be watching this thread.

Yes, if you are willing to start a contest I would offer a product too - or a free choice of an item as well because I often see contests where I already own a majority of the prices. So a "free choice-prize" may be more attractive.

I'm not always right, but my mistakes are more interesting!

And I am not strange, I am Limited Edition!

I am very pleased by everyone's enthusiasm!

If I don't get a response back from the mod I emailed for more information I will try other mods to see what needs to be done to get this going.

**LillianH used to handle contests here, but she traveled on. JasonK now holds the position she held. He might be the one you need to contact if you haven't already.

If you do get this going, I'll donate 2 items from my store.

Oh yeah...if this goes through this time, you can ignore the private message. grin

You can also email contests@renderosity.com for more information on how to get  contest going.  MendyH is the Contest Manager and she can help answer questions you may have and what the process is..

StaceyG ( ) posted Thu, 07 February 2008 at 8:13 PM

Oh another thing not to forget is if this is a Poser contest or whatever, you can also get the Poser mods to announce it in the Poser SubCommunity page.....And you can submit something to the calendar so it will be listed there and of course it will be listed on the Contest section of the Front page..

muralist ( ) posted Fri, 08 February 2008 at 3:40 AM

Sounds like fun!  I'll offer a copy of Celeste's Diner as a prize.  Send me a site mail when this gets started -- for some reason I dont get emails from Renderosity for forum replies again.

pdblake ( ) posted Fri, 08 February 2008 at 4:21 AM

I'll donate an item from my store too. PM me when you get thing sorted:)
