and a reference to Zhann. Some cool models od the dvd coverdisc too.

I think a heretical App (Cinema 4d, version...uh..6?) is also in the mag.

Carrara 5 pro FYI, but of course a true believer would never even consider installing it.

It can only be a small heretical app because of all the Poser crap they have started putting on the discs.

I can only tell you in brief why I plan to.  After years of dabbling in 3D (I started with Bryce2) I have gotten to the point where I am starting to receive commisions for doing stills and animation work in Carrara. In other words; my "hobby" is starting to pay for itself.  I have done this all in Carrara5 Standard, and the Pro version comes with render nodes, and other advanced tools, and will export animation files with information that AfterEffects and other video compositors can use. So I can do even more pro quality work.
   I won't crit Bryce 'cause I still use it for certain tasks and for fun. It is still about the easiest app out there for setting up a scene. I just won't use Bryce when I am under a deadline, or for animation because Carrara offers me many more animation tools and capabilities, and it renders much faster. 
  I also love being able to use 2nd party plug-ins which allow me to achieve effects, or have shader options that Carrara doesn't have "out-of-the-box".
These are much less expensive than say plug-ins for any of the "major' 3D apps, yet I am able to compete with users of these apps for many jobs. Many of the skills that I am learning in Carrara will transfer very well in learning how to use 3DMax, Maya, XSI, C4D, etc. if I eventually decide to go that route.
  As far as reasons to "install that Frankenstein", you could easily go to DAZ's website and check out Carrara's features, and see if any of them are desirable for you to learn. I take Pakled's attitude in that I am willing to try any app, 3D or otherwise available to me, especially if it is cheap, or FREE, and add it to my toolkit if I find it useful.
  I respect the artwork that you have done in Bryce. If you are satisfied with the toolkit and abilities that Bryce gives you I say more power to you! I just wanted to push my comfort zone a little and learn an app that is admittedly more complex, but it also has more possibilties for the area and direction I wish to go. looks like I'm starting to backslide...;) Oh well, I got Bryce 4 (albeit after I got 5) in a disc on one of these magazines once...;) No program is ever useless, it  can serve as a bad example..;)

Now Pak, you know I meant that in the nicest way! You've even managed to do some modeling work in BLENDER, fer gosh sakes! I have tried to come to terms with that app 'cause it has so many neat tools and potential, but the interface and method of working make me feel like I'm trying to do Origami while wearing a blindfold and boxing gloves. Oh well, I'll keep working on it and maybe it'll soak through my thick skull like water on a rock. In tribute to you Pak; I'm going to go fix something fried in bacon and eat it. ;-)

I did give it go..... oh heck, there goes my 'anychanceofa' Cardinal status...... but I found the interface to be unnecessarilly difficult. ...oh there comes that Cardinal chance again... Bryce got it right in so many ways, so why can't an 3Dapp be sophisticated and powerful AND have a wonderfully staright forward simple to use out of the box without having to read a bloody manual interface. Yep! Bryce has that. Possible Cardinal status absolutly glowing now!!

well, to be honest, I haven't done much modeling in Blender. It's just a tool to do some things Wings won't..;) I still scratch my head over that one...;) you're not alone.

I have 3ds Max on my computer, but do most of my modelling in Wings 3D. Why? Because I like using it. Bryce is the same. It is one of those apps that I enjoy using.  It may have short comings, and it may use archane ways of achieving certain results, but it is fun. 

For me, it is about enjoying the process. 

I hear ya Cyba. I can't afford 3dsMax, or any of the other majors yet, but I may go that route eventually since DAZ seems to be intent on turning Carrara into their top-of-the-line content renderer instead of further developing it into a competitive all-round 3D app.
   I have about the same attitude toward Poser-type apps as you do. I am still proud to be a Wingsian heretic like yourself, but I'm really learning to like Hexagon2.2. I've been building terrain blocks and outcrops in Wings and displacement painting and texturing them in Hexagon. They work very well together since Hexagon really likes .obj imports. I still love Bryce though. It opened up the doors to the whole world of 3D and I'll always be fond of it.

I went to Borders today to look for that one, but they're still on issue #99. It didn't look that interesting, so I got a Photoshop magazine that looked like it had some of Rochr's stuff in it instead. I guess I'll have to wait another month.

I'll have to see what they got here, its a kind of hit and miss.

Sounds like most newsagents etc...some have it sometimes...maybe or not at all. I have to scrounge 5 different newsagentcies for the mags but dont want tosubscribe as some issues (in all the mags) are not worth it.

That and the fact that most of the magazines that I'd like to subscribe to cost over $200 per yearly subscription.  So I was allowed to subscribe to one.. and I did.

the Disc on 99 contains some Daz props, some kind of Mesh Mapping program and some other things I would never bother to use.

Can the results be used in Daz/Wings3d/Bryce etc do you know Incarnadine?

Yeah Mapzone can help you make some great textures, but you don't have to buy the mag to get it.. G**gle Mapzone and you can find their website and d/l it from there.

I give up I went to 2 more bookstores and all had Issue #99.  I will wait till next week or after and check again.

On a side note.. I was also looking for a Computer Music Magazine, which nobody seemed to have, one store had two copies but both were missing the included DVD Disc.

So tonight I was at another Chapters looking for the 3D and Computer Music Magazine... the guy who handles the magazines was really cool!!  he said they didnt have any Computer Music Magazines left in stock... but proceded to pull out 4 Different DVD Discs that were no longer use to him since they no longer had any Computer Music Magazines, so he gave all 4 of them for free and to top it all off, one of the 4 discs, is actually from the latest issue that I was looking for.

I dont really care about the magazine itself its the content of the Discs that is what I'm interested in..  Considering that each Magazine is about $21 + Tax = $23+ I got about $95 worth of Discs for free!! :)

In the States here the issues of 3DWorld are around $16 U.S. Still, for the price  of two mags, I can get two commercial licenses(for a friend and myself) with 10 render nodes! We can do some serious web design then.

If you live in the US, a 13-issue subscription costs £60

going by the current exchange rate 60 pounds = $118.75  works out to be just under $10 per issue.**

Just like 3D World Magazine, I only buy certain issues that have content that interest me.   It depends on the content really... like if there are any free audio samples or Virtual Synths.

Issue #100 is now available state-side. :)  (Or at least here in the midwest.)  Went to Borders Bookstore today and nabbed one. Seems funny going to a bookstore for one specific mag, but it has good stuff on the included CD. I'm also suprised at how busy the bookstore is on a Saturday, I had to park two shopping center entrances over - since the front and side lots adjacent to the bookstore were full. (Maybe there was some other deal or something going on?)

Thanks for the heads-up Paul.  Issue 100 hasn't hit the local bookstores in Portland/Vancouver yet, but I'll bet they're shipped from the East Coast. I'll check for it tomorrow.

Ok so... I came home from work.. changed out of my dirty work pants into nice clean ones and drove to get some grocery shopping done and buy the magazine.

Wife and I get there only to find that, I left my wallet in my work pants... so she had to buy me the magazine. :)  So I only purchased one issue... I might go back for another... there are some neat stuff on the CD.

Now with Carrara 5 Pro in hand, I can re-start the video I was working on before my HD Crash.

It'll be interesting to see what gets cooked up after that adventure. :)

I just wanna read about Zhann in that issue.

I hit paydirt at Barnes and Noble yesterday. Issue #100 finally hit the stands and I snagged a couple of copies. :-)
