THE PLACE FOR ALL THINGS BRYCE - GOT A PROBLEM? YOU'VE COME TO THE RIGHT PLACE

Subject: OT..going for an upgrade

CrazyDawg ( ) posted Fri, 01 February 2008 at 11:44 PM · edited Fri, 22 November 2024 at 2:29 PM

I wanted to ask this before doing anything..i am going to be upgrading my computer before long, want to get up in with the times.
Now one main question i have about bryce 6 is, will there be any problems with duel core processor.

What i am plan on getting.

Athlon 64 X2 5200+ 2.6 GHz, Socket AM2 65W
Gigabyte GA-MA770-DS3 Motherboard, Socket AM2+
4GB DDR2 667MHz  2x2gig blocks : i know some will state this is to much, other reasons for getting 4 gig.
8600 GT, GeForce 8600 GT, 256MB, DDR3, PCIe-16, TV out, DVI, HDTV, SLI ready

I have opinions of my own -- strong opinions -- but I don't always agree with them.

Dumb question from a "heretic" ;)
Is Bryce6, 64 bit or only 32?

If not, they better add that to Bryce7 when it comes out, as. 64 bit and 8 gig ram is AWESOME in apps that can handle it, night and day difference.
throws bazillions of items into a scene and it doesn't slow down :)

How much is enough though? For yearsadvances in PC hardware have promised to speed things up for us, only for the damned software producers to slow things down again.....

I got 4gigs but the system uses 800mb for graphic/memory & stuff hence this screen grab of my Pc's properties.

@ Sndcastie

How much faster renders do you estimate having gone to quad core?

And explain to this computer illiterate the difference in XP pro and XP pro x 64 as it relates to cg software.

SndCastie ( ) posted Sat, 02 February 2008 at 6:05 PM

You are asking me who is about as illiterate as you I just told them what I wanted it for and this is what they suggested when I had it built. I did know I wanted a quad and 4 gb ram as I am tired of having to upgrade and prebuilt ones sucked. They told me to go to 64 bit as 32 only recognizes up to 3 gb of memory. The renders are faster I have only done one. LOL but the multi tasking rocks. :O) before it would really slow me down to almost a crawl.

All my programs work on the 64 bit except corel officex3 it won't even install.  But Bryce,Poser,PSP10,PainterX and Vue6 pro all work fine.

The renders are Much MUCH faster.  I had an animation I wanted to render on my Laptop it was going to take I think 22 hours, and that was the Bryce estimate before the anti-aliasing kicked in, which sometimes seems to take the times up again.

On the PC it took a lot less, can't remember the exact time but it felt like about half the time.

Note that 32 bit systems can run 4 gig (with WIndows tweak). but each app cannot use more than 2 gigs RAM.

You have to have a 64 bit OS,and an app that is truly 64 bit, to get all the use. Otherwise the app will only use 2 gig, and rest be used for WIndows and other apps.

Vista Ultimate will install non-64 bit apps into a seperate program file folder.

Example: Photoshop CS2 is 32 bit, but, because of some tweaks in it's code, it can use a full 4gig of ram if you have it on a 64 bit machine, but it is not a 64 bit app.
Confusing, lol

Vue is 64 bit, Think Rhino is too?
