Subject: Blender to RenderMan

Ayamikhan ( ) posted Sat, 09 February 2008 at 4:55 PM · edited Mon, 10 February 2025 at 11:04 AM

In autumn last year the Blender to RenderMan forum created by Ted Gocek,
that was at http://www.bestfreeforums.com/forums/blendertorender.html,
was deleted by the host for no reason.

Neither he nor I have a copy of the SQL database, or the facilities to set up
our own PHP forum server, or maintain one, so we discussed spreading a
new forum across a Google Group, Blogger account, and Googlepages site.

These are now at :

http://groups.google.com/group/blendertorenderman

http://blendertorenderman.blogspot.com

Announcements, discussions, questions and answers can be posted to the group.

In addition, once developers of Blender to RenderMan export tools join the group, they will be invited to join the blog.

Announcements about exporters and other tools can be posted on the group,
with a link to a more detailed post on here, which will also be able to include images, as well as better options for syntax highlighting of code.

There are several different tools for exporting from Blender to RenderMan and there will be screenshots posted by the respective developers that are members of the blog.

The Blender to RenderMan export tools at this time are :

A good page on how Neqsus/BToR is used with Blender and Aqsis can be seen here :

RenderMan is a generic term for any renderer, including Aqsis, that conforms to RiSpec, the Pixar RenderMan Interface Specification. So, as well as Pixar's Photorealistic RenderMan, there is also :

  • 3Delight
  • Air
  • Angel
  • Aqsis
  • BMRT
  • Entropy
  • Lucille
  • Pixie
  • RenderDotC
  • BMRT and Entropy are discontinued. BMRT's author, Larry Gritz, now works at NVidia and develops Gelato. He, Matt Pharr and colleagues at Exluna also developed Entropy. Matt Pharr since then developed PBRT. LuxRender is a development of PBRT. These are not RiSpec renderers.
  • Gelato
  • PBRT
  • LuxRender
  • Hence the list in my previous post, of several different programs for exporting scenes from Blender, to RenderMan. The Forum's news group is for announcements, discussion, questions and answers on all of these methods, the blog is for more detailed information from the developers of them.

There are a number of links in the blog's sidebar to various tools and resources for Blender, RenderMan and generic 3d.

As far as I'm aware RenderMan is a pixar product. https://renderman.pixar.com/

There are other renderer's which support some / most / all of the renderman spec, but they are not the RenderMan product.

Attached Link: https://renderman.pixar.com/products/whatsrenderman/index.htm

*"RenderMan is also an industry standard interface specification for photorealistic renderers"*

Near the bottom of the page.  I guess it's the difference between RenderMan with the little registered symbol and without. ;)  But yeah, I mostly assume people mean the pixar one when they say that.
