The Zhann item is only a little thing. No need to get too excited.

Quote - I just wanna read about Zhann in that issue.

Its a small Tip.

Been to every newsagents and borders stores in a 10 klm radius and I can only get issues 99 + 101. One newsagents said they only got 2 copies and those hardly hit the shelf, so I have had enough running around and put in for a back order of issue 100 before it sells out completely.

Analog-X64 ( ) posted Sat, 09 February 2008 at 4:54 PM

Boofy: I'm crossing my fingers that you find a copy.

There is an offer in there that ends in february which is to upgrade to Carrara Pro v6 for $164.. which is not a bad deal.. .I'm thinking about it.

Boofy ( ) posted Sat, 09 February 2008 at 11:37 PM

Thanks Analog-X, so am I. I have heard that Carrara is a good prog so it would be fun to try it....sorry Bryster, the heretic in me is just tooooo curious🤤, keep that comfy chair handy.

I found a cool little trick in Carrara that I thought I'd share with you. I took a texture from that cgtexture site that was mentioned previously and opened it in Photoshop. I converted a copy of the texture into grayscale and applied a gaussian blur of about 3 pixels. I opened up Carrara and added a couple of sphere primitives to the scene and added a finite plane for the ground. I added a realistic sky background with skylight for a Global Illumination effect.   I took the texture previously prepared in PS and added it to the displacement channel in the sphere's shader. I took the original texture and applied it in the color channel, made a copy of the sphere, reduced the size slightly, moved it upward, and rotated it about 45 degrees.   I added another prepared texture to displace and color the finite plane, added a little tree for scale, hit the render button, and viola!  I'm stoked at how well the textures and displacement wrap around the Carrara primitives. The actual geometry of the sphere is being changed by the displacement maps so you can have realistic shadows and lighting. The whole procedure is dead simple and took about 30 mouse button clicks including the image prep in PS. I think it makes a really cool looking rock formation. What do you think?   The pictures show the spheres and plane before and after rendering. If you like, I can write up a tutorial of this and other tricks I've learned. Here is the before showing wireframe view...

And here is the "rockstack" render. Obviously I could go nuts with this and add more plants and trees sticking out of the rocks, more rock stacks, background mountains, etc. but you get the idea.

Danamo: That is just too awesome!!! Going to try it out myself... nice little tutorial. :)

Boofy: Did you find a copy of the magazine yet??

danamo ( ) posted Mon, 11 February 2008 at 3:24 PM

Thanks Analog-X! It was just so easy to do and I hadn't seen a tutorial using this method.

Boofy ( ) posted Mon, 11 February 2008 at 5:38 PM

Nope! i have 99, one store has 101. No luck for 100. I havent heard back from my email to order a copy......I think I will wrap it in gold trim if I eventually get the $%$$ thing!

Hmmm, OK this is what I have got....what next??? I cannot find out in the manual where the blazes my toolbars have gone to :cursing:.....unless The Bryster has snuck in and pinched them on me to save my heretic soul .

Can anyone tell me where to find them please????

danamo ( ) posted Thu, 14 February 2008 at 2:42 AM

It's TheBryster's Fault!!  Seriously though Boofy,  I haven't seen quite this problem before. This does look kinda like an OpenGL glitch of some sort, or a video driver prob. I had a problem with disappearing menus on my old machine, but haven't since I built a newer system with a much better Video card. Do you have this installed on a newer machine?

From what I can see from your screenshot, you can still see your FILE Menu header at top left of screen. If you can click and open it there's a setting you can check  underFILE>Preferences>Application>3DView, which can switch between the software preview and the OpenGL. It can't hurt to try switching from one to the other to see if that might help clear things up.

If that doesn't help, I would recommend trying out this question on the denizens of the Carrara Forum because they in truth would probably be able to answer this question better Than I. Besides, dear girl, we don't want to give TheBryster any excuse to shift this whole thread to another Forum just because you asked a question about that app, lol. This thread has turned into a thorn in his side, and we want to keep it there, haha! I'm enjoying my "heretic" status way too much!

FranOnTheEdge ( ) posted Thu, 14 February 2008 at 11:23 AM

Cripes!

I've only just now realized - reading this thread that you are saying that the 100 Issue of 3DWorld has Carrara5 pro on it... full version.

:b_upset:
:b_angry:
:b_confused:
:b_stunned:
:b_rolleyes:
:b_drool:

As I had not been able to install from a friend's Computer World copy, and couldn't find a copy to buy myself, I'd pretty much given up on it - so you mean to say that I'd had in in my 3DWorld mag all the time?

Grrr!!!   Yippeee!

Now I dunno whether to be angry or happy, both probably, split personality. Lol!

Is this the Bryce forum or Carrara?

danamo ( ) posted Thu, 14 February 2008 at 6:34 PM

Forgive me if I ask an obvious question Fran, but you are trying to install using a DVD-rom, or DVD burner aren't you? I ask because I had a friend who tried to install using his CD-rom and it took me the longest time to explain to him why that wouldn't work. ;-) I didn't have any probs with my installation of CarraraPro5.

In answer to D_a_M, this is the new Carrara Forum annex, didn't someone tell you? ;-P

Boofy ( ) posted Thu, 14 February 2008 at 7:55 PM

D-a-M, blame The Bryster, he started it! we just gleefully jumped on board!
Seriously though I am going to unload and reload it on the weekend Danamo and see if that helps. Jen

Thanks all, I have - it seems - a faulty or corrupt disc, sent it back to Future Publishing as per their instructions, today.

(Not scratched, just no good)

(P.S. I was using a dvd drive - I have two, tried it in both.  I know I'm usually incredibly thick, but this time I knew about CD's and DVD's but my drive will play both...)

Oh, P.P.S. saw Zhann's mention!

See? back on topic... ggggg

Hi,

i didn't see this until now, I don't come here all that much anymore.
If this is the QnA-image you're talking about, 3D World's 6 month copyright has run out, and I could always post it on my website, if people are interested?
The reference in the QnA is to Zahnn's Raging Seas/The summoning.
