Subject: Tips for Comic Book line?

Casette ( ) posted Fri, 31 August 2007 at 5:02 PM · edited Tue, 23 July 2024 at 6:53 AM

Hi folks

I've drawn comic books with Poser. Now I want to try different styles. I've seen some toon renders, but I don't like them too much. Please can you advice me where I can find tuts to render pics in a toonish style THAT DOESN'T LOOKS LIKE POSER?

Thanks :)

There used to be a member here called ***"Darskills"*** who was doing some decent Cell type shading  in poser but he has'nt posted in a while.

I personally never got anywhere trying toon  line renders in poser thus i use the toon module in Cinema4d

cheers

Or maybe the matter is to ask the drawers about what tricks they're using

Please, do you remember Rosity users that are using Poser as base software for toon renders?

I remember Archangel_Gabriel's GHOST. He don't use ton line but his postwork is stunning

Well I use olivier's toon shaders, but I'm sure you've seen examples of my tooning already. thing is I choose quadritone textured which is more poserlike, but there are options for less poserlike, you can even choose not to use the textures at all, and you can make the lines heavier etc. Then I bring it into vue either import directly or just superimpose the PNG exported from poser. One of the important things to consider is how quick and easy it is to do as if you are making thousands of panels you don't want to spend ages with each one. Also being able to add explosions and fire etc is another plus Love esther PS Aiko wearing shadownet's new BC_Aiko jungle gear

There is a problem with C4D tooning which wolf359 isn't concerned about because his characters are all little robots without transmaps. Our characters have transmapped hair, and eyelashes and clothes. It is not easy to set this up quickly in C4D sketch and toon. Love esther

I've taken a view at jweb's page and downloaded his toon shaders, but my tests are by the moment too much toonish

I found in my HD some photoshop Art Actions bought here. Finally a decent test...

Well one of the reasons I like olivier's toon shaders is that I have semidieu's free version of shaderworks that is designed to apply olivier's toon shaders to the whole scene all in one hit so that really speeds things up. I think postwork in phtoshop can look quite good and i often use it on top of the tooning or for tooning untooned background elements, but I don't reckon it is all that good for the whole comic. On the other hand it is quick, and it is better to have made your comic then never getting it done because the software isn't really up to doing perfectly what you envisage. Adam wright has some nifty photoshop tooning actions, and I think it was him that came up with the suggestion to blur the background layer in photoshop and toon the foreground things. Love esther

I've seen people who use the Poser to Manga Studio to Photoshop pipeline.  If you really want to go from 3D to 2D there is a specific software that is designed for this.  You won't be able to load your Poser figures into it but perhaps props?

Here are some links and tips that I hope will be helpful.  Most people produce toon pictures using shaders (Estherau mentioned Olivier's Art Materials, but there are others available here and at CP) or by using the "cartoon with outline" mode and rendering in Preview mode.  I'm mostly interested in creating line art, and I found the following to be extremely helpful:

http://www.renderosity.com/news.php?viewStory=13559

And here's a tutorial on creating anime-style renders:

http://www.renderosity.com/mod/tutorial/index.php?print=66

And here's a more recent one on using Photoshop and other 2D programs to do the postwork:

http://www.silverblades-suitcase.com/tutorials/htm/17.html

Another possibility is to set up your materials in Poser using the Toon Materials wacro, turn all the light/dark materials in the toon node to white or black, and then fiddle with the toon ID settings so that Poser will draw the outlines where you want them.  My avatar image was done with this technique, but it takes a long time to set up the figures and create new material zones with the grouping editor.  I'm not sure it was worth the effort.

One final tip:  vectorizing your image using a program like Adobe Illustrator or CorelDraw will make the lines look smoother and more attractive.

that's a cute girl, sam!  I saw her in one of the banners and wondered who created the image.

anyway, my vote is to use whatever shaders one can get, then redraw/reshade the entire
render in photoshop so it doesn't look like it was machine-produced.  the only professional-
looking cartoons I've seen in gallery here were either entirely hand-drawn, or used
variations of jwebster's method (render in poser, then retouch in photoshop so that it's no longer
recognisable as a poser render).  none of the toon shaders/actions lend themselves to
producing an outstanding animation IMVHO. that's where the korean anime studios become
essential.

TY, Miss Nancy.  Someone else was asking about the banner, too.  For the record, it's V2 with a StefyZZ texture and my own dial spin.  It's my version of My Good Lady's best friend, Helen.

You're right about using a combination of things to get the best effects.  I have a few other Photoshop actions which do similar things.

One thing which I think can be very effective is to blend the black and white line work onto the original render.
