How is the fire  effect attained using lights for jet planes or spaceship engines?

I'll typically use an object with the Alpha value set at 100. Then I assign a glow color to it.

Doesn't the fire object from the assemble mode actually make some light?

I find that it looks neat by turning it sideways and setting its container to cylindrical, set the tip color to a dark blue/violet color and the base color to a whitish cyan - makes a cool afterburner. There's more adjustments to it, but those all depend on the look you're going for.

The fire object actually gives no light. You have to add it. ;-)
