Subject: Product Review Confusion

thefixer ( ) posted Sun, 24 February 2008 at 5:20 AM · edited Mon, 25 November 2024 at 11:42 PM

OK I look at product reviews before buying but one thing confuses me. I look at a reviewer and then go look at their gallery to see what they have done with the product that they are endorsing, and they don't even have anything in their gallery never mind anything with the product in!!!
So what's going on????

Bought for commercial or personal use?  Not got round to posting images using the stuff yet?

Both situations apply in a lot of cases with things I buy.

Yea I can see the logic in that but there seems to be a hell of a lot of examples in the MP where I can't see the product in renders by peeps that have purchased it!

Guess I'm just the suspicious type!!

A lot of people don't have galleries here, a lot use sites like deviant, others use their own website etc.

I hadn't thought about it before, but thefixer is making a good point.   I can say that I love a product to bits in a review, but why should a prospective purchaser place any value on that, without some supporting evidence?

Lucifer_The_Dark ( ) posted Sun, 24 February 2008 at 6:46 AM

Is there some unwritten rule that purchasers HAVE to post renders in the gallery? Maybe that could be added to the next review of the TOS :P

*Is there some unwritten rule that purchasers HAVE to post renders in the gallery?

  • I don't think your attitude is warranted, it was a perfectly reasonable observation I made this morning!
I looked at a number of items that are in my wishlist and looked at the reviews and clicked on many of these reviewers galleries and didn't see a single image with these items being used and that was in peeps that actually had galleries, a lot didn't!

I didn't for one minute say peeps should be compelled to make and post images if they've reviewed, just said it was strange!!

Thanx for your input though, it was really helpful!! [not].

There really should be a way of conveying tongue firmly placed in cheek when typing something on here apart from silly little smilies that don't always work.

Is my memory failing me again or was there a change to the purchaser review policy where only good reviews are allowed? if I'm right then I wouldn't take any notice of reviews as they're practically worthless as they stand, if I'm right of course ;)

Nope.  All reviews, good or bad, are allowed provided they are within the TOS.  That's to say, you can't just say a product is a load of crap but you can say something along the lines of:

The seams are not finished properly, the MAT poses don't work, the mesh isn't optimized for Poser...

And so forth.

pink and wishful thinking, sam... some time ago i posted a review for a bestseller-merchants latest peach. in this review i said: - that the textures are too blurred, - that the bumpmaps are not much good, - that most of the pz2's are unnecessarily big, - that dialling a couple of bodymorphs is disappointing, - and that the face is very pretty. consequently i gave 1 star of 5. the review was deleted within a day or two, and i got a mail from 'staff@renderosity.com' saying that... Q:"Your Product Review submission has been removed due to one of the following reasons below: - Personal attacks. - Profanity or obscenities. - Technical support for the product. (Please use SiteMail to contact Vendor) - Review was posted twice. - You requested to have the review removed. blablabla..." welcome to planet earth... ;)

I will often review a produc that does not that appear in any of my gallery images.  I either use it for my own promotional images (especially hair and character packs) or for images that were never intended to be placed on the internet for various reasons.

Just because a reviewer does not place an image in their gallery with that item does not mean they aren't using or the review is somehow less worthy than those who do.  It just means that their intended use of the item, whilst within the guideines of the EULA, is not one which necessitates placing an image online.

99% of my drawing I make for personal accomplishments only, I put stuff in my gallery on a whim, I couldn't even tell you how many months it has been between my last two postings. I may love Billybobs Amazing Breast Enhancing Bustier and give him a great review, but having it show up in my gallery is another thing altogether. I am shy with my work and only post stuff that makes me REALLY REALLY happy. :-)

Renderosity doesn't require the person to post images of the product they buy. They could very well like stated above have their own website or another site  they post their images to. There is nothing wrong with this practice.

*Renderosity doesn't require the person to post images of the product they buy.

*I never said they did, that wasn't the point!!

The point was that I wanted to actually see some renders that other peeps had done with these products to get a better idea as to how good they actually were, so I thought that if someone had recommended an item they would have at least one image in their gallery with it!!

How bloody silly of me to think such a thing!!

In my case, there are a lot of products I bought and actually used, but hadn't made a gallery-type image with them.  Maybe one out every 10 things that I use actually end up in the gallery.

*You can do that by going to the merchant's credit gallery, no?  I do have to admit there were a few times when I wished that merchant credit gallery was little more accesible - like maybe from the product page.
Then again, I don't know how many pictures of product in it's default form I could look at before blowing my stack. :tt2:

I don't want to see the merchants images of their product, I want to see what others had done with it seeing as though they'd given such a glowing reference, each time I checked someone's gallery that had endorsed there was no image with it and some didn't even have a gallery!!
I just thought it was strange that's all!!

Anyway as I seem to be the only one that gets what I'm on about, I'll just forget it and either buy it on reviews alone or decide not to, whatever!!!

I would either look at the pics that are supplied with the product, or go to the merchants website and look there, or if all else fails maybe politely email them and ask for some sample pics.

Yea but you're missing the point, I want to see what others have done with it, you don't always get a true picture so to speak from viewing the merchants promos!!

If you go to a merchant credit gallery, you get to see what other people made with particular vendors product For example: http://www.renderosity.com/mod/gallery/browse.php?vendor_name=aery_Soul

The way you access it right now, you go into the gallery pulldown, and select 'by vendor', then you have to type in the vendor name.

I wish there was a link to something like that on product pages, where you have a directlink to the images that people credit to a particular product.

Giana ( ) posted Sun, 24 February 2008 at 1:52 PM

the Merchant Credit Gallery, also known as Search By Vendor [ i'm pretty these two things return the same result], is a gallery not only of images the merchant has done with their product, but also what others have done...

of course, that relies upon others having provided credits back to the merchant when they posted their image[s]...

Can I just say that I fully understand where fixer is coming from, a vendor render doesn't always represent a realistic or achievable (by the rest of us) example of what the item will look like when we get our hands on it.

Maybe I'm being a bit thick but I can't seem to get the search by Vendor thingy to work, off to walk the dogs now so I'll try again later.

Just another thought - some people may use Poser primarily for images which aren't allowed to show here. This case probably isnt't that rare, if you concider the amount ot pictures at "that other site".

Just my 5 cents.

A lot of sites don't have the feature. You just buy completely blind other than the promo images. If it becomes an issue of personal credibility let me tell you  right up front,  take it or leave it. That's your choice. . By leaving 5 Stars I'm not endorsing any product. I'm only sharing my insight and rating my experience with the product. You might think it sucks when you buy it. It's only an opinion. I won't give you your money back if you don't like it as much as I did. That is my terms of service where feedback is concerned.

ThrommArcadia ( ) posted Tue, 26 February 2008 at 2:09 PM

I would like to echo an earlier comment and say that it would be nice if there was a link to a Vendor's credit gallery obviously posted on the product page.  I too never realized such a thing exsisted, and I almost always try to credit vendors.

I do leave reviews for products that haven't made their way into my gallery.  I may have played with the items and done some test renders but never finished a pic, or some such...

Still, I can see what thefixer means and I understand the frustration.

I can only talk for myself...I'm a mad mixer when it comes to doing images, one piece from one package, another from another package..and so on.

And since I'm darn lazy in my image description I uselly never tries to list exaclty all products I have used. Just an overall list.

I tries to be more accuret when it comes to freebies.

But I know what thread starter is saying - i have sometimes got the wantings of somethings, thanks to an image in the gallerys.

There are so few credits given in the galleries, mostly due to the awkwardness of leaving them but partly due to purchasers thinking, quite rightly so, that their money spent is credit enough.

Such a link, for the very vast majority of products, will lead to a blank page, or a few more of the vendor's own promos at most.
