Subject: Bryce help - how to make craters

IO4 ( ) posted Sun, 24 February 2008 at 11:58 AM · edited Mon, 25 November 2024 at 9:30 PM

Hi all

I'm hoping someone can help me with this - I did once find a tutorial on it, but can't find it for the life of me now. I'm trying to make a crater/hole in the ground in my scene. I thought I could do it by creating a terrain, turning it upside down and booleaning (is that a word lol) it with a volume ground plain  . But it doesn't seem to be working. I'm sure it's actually quite simple (when you know how:)  ).

Any tips anyone?

Why not use a cube instead of a ground plane? You could stretch that to be pretty much infinite.

Ahah! Now why didn't I think of that. Worth trying Orbital, thanks:)

Or just thought, if you click and hold on ground plane you can choose surface or volume. Click on volume and this will solve your problem, and you will have an infinite solution to the one I posted above.

Not sure I understand that - I tried using a volume ground plane but it didn't work.

Draw some circles on a square. The edges need to be  whiter to make the lip of the craters. The insides need to be darker to make the inside deeper than the surrounding terrain.

Create a bryce terrain. Load the image into the pictures tab of the terrain editor. Click on the elevation tab and press or roll the erode button till the craters are like you like.

Position your terrain in front of the camera so you can't see the front edge. Use the same texture on the terrain and the default plain. I used Graysand from the terrains - plains menu in Bryce 6 for this. Pick a good sky like this starfield and you are done.

If you want more background you can build more terrains or mountains. as long as you step down from the camera perspective you should be able to hide the edges.

Attached Link: Terrabrush

You might try Terrabrush. It's freeware and makes craters, sand dunes monuments, and many, many other types of terrain.

Exports Terragen files, Obj, Lwo and Bmp just to name a few.

I've used it a lot and it works great. Very simple to use even with all the options.

The site is in German but you have options for language when you install the software.

Hopes this helps.

I don't know if you already solved your problem with craters and holes.
The friends already gave some instructions, I will give an idea, use a lot that in my works.

Choose a mountain, turn her for the summit to be down aligning her/it to the ground, go up a little and later transform her/it in negative.
Contain the mountain and the ground;
You will have a hole... your size and depth will depend on the size and of the height of the mountain.
Veja esss exemplo:

To prefer orders him/her the file Bryce.

I hope has helped.

Thank you Thandaluz - that is exactly what I was looking for. Strange thing is I tried that but for some reason it didn't work, so I thought I was doing something wrong (must have been). Just tried it again in a new scene and it worked fine:)
