Subject: Color me confused...

Just checked out an item at share CG that is for non commercial use only, yet they are asking for a donation? Can someone please explain why you would pay for something you can only use personally? Not slamming anyone just trying to figure it out.

Maybe the donation thing is on by default?  I really don't know, just guessing.

A donation isn't  "paying" for something. It's a "just because" type thing that you give as a thank you.  It's not a mandatory thing. Think of it like giving someone who you appreciate here, a gift certificate as a thank you for their help or their kindness and generosity. It's just a gift, not payment.

Ahh. Well if I could use the item for anything I want I would probably be more inclined to be generous.   8^)

Because someone else put an effort into making it, so if you like it and are feeling generous and can afford it, why not make make a donation.
I mean, my clothes and food and house and computer and a number of programs are all for personal use, but I still have to pay for it, because someone else put the time and effort into making it.

Now if I acquire an item that I will make money off of, I would have an expectation of having to pay more (share profits). At least that's how most businessses I know of work.

Most freebies usually aren't offered as charity or entitlements.
On number of online places offering meshes for people's personal use is a self-promotion strategy. If you want to get noticed, you pretty much have to do it.

All theese things take time and effort to make, so why should people whom are making them offer it for free - especially free for someone else to try and make profit off of it?

Wouldn't that be a little like getting in line for a soup kitchen, the reselling the soup around the corner?

I have made sometimes kinda of serious donations (multiples of the suggested) for freebies in gratitude. Depends how flush I am.

I miss the "pre-commercial" days of Poser content something serious. There was some awesome generosity in the community circa 1998-2000.

Think of people like Kozoburo and Mr. Maya. Traveler, PhilC and Gerald Day. byAnton! I don't believe that was marketing at all! Just pure generosity.

I think that is just a ask for help to keep their site working...

A donation is not mandatory... You just donate or not.

The donate button seems to appear automatically.  All mine have one and I didn't put it on there

mervpaine, I gotta ask... do you know if donations with that button actually go to your account?

I once worked a place where the management put a huge donation glass on the counter which was emptied into the till at the end of the night... it killed me that patrons thought their generous tips were going to the staff! I worked another place that put up a big sign that said "No Tipping" and then at the end of the night the management would settle a large cash tip on us beyond our paycheck... quite a surprise the first day!

At sharecg the donate button hooks to the paypal account you enter in your profile . Anyone wishing to donate can specify how much and how they are going to pay it via paypal.

Its a nice feature if theres a free item  that serves your purpose and you can afford to give even a dollar it helps the freestuff makers to pay the bills , and hopefully keeps good freestuff going into the community.

A lot of people using Poser or Daz studio are not doing commercial work so everything they buy from Renderosity or Daz or most other places is really no different than freestuff, in terms of their usage of it . Does that mean Daz shouldnt get paid ?

I'm not saying that folks aren't generous for giving freebies. Just that if I like something enough to donate money I should be able to use it commercially. They put themselves in that light when they ask for money for a free item. They make themselves merchants, and in my eyes they are treated as such. I would not pay for an item I can't use commercially. I also have bills to pay. Like I said, not slamming anyone just my opinion, which I still think I'm allowed to have.   8^)
markschum I'm having a problem understanding your logic. So you say in theory if I only use my car for Sunday drives I don't need to pay for it? If you buy something you should have the right to use it commercially....period. I don't know of many folks here who would buy something from Daz or Rendo and not expect this. Sounds like you're just trying to argue for the sake of it. At any rate, I'm turning off notify so don't bother trying to skin me...lol
