Subject: Creating a simple Environment

bandolin ( ) posted Thu, 06 March 2008 at 9:56 AM · edited Mon, 25 November 2024 at 8:06 AM

Since I don't use Poser all that often, I've forgotten many of the steps need to create just a simple room.

I have a room with 4 surfaces (Floor, Right wall, Left wall, Back wall) and I want to be able to make them into body parts so that they can be hidden by the user.

I remember something about PHI builder, and the Hierarchy dialog box and so on but I can't remember the steps to get all working.

I've searched the forums to no avail. Can anyone help me out? Maybe there is a specific tutorial out there?

Tx

Hi bandolin,

*Here's one way to make a room for Poser as separate props.
You can parent all 4 walls to the floor so you can move the room easily.
It does not need to be a figure althoudh you can make it into a figure if you want.

cheers,
dr geep

P.S. There may be other classes on the 4th Floor at Poser U. that you might find helpful.

Thank you, I am somewhat familiar with your extensive tutorials. Great stuff. But, I am using 3DS Max with texture maps applied to the walls using UVW mapping. Furthermore the walls are not exactly flat, there is angular geometry involved. So, I really need the workflow for importing and creating a figure of sorts. I've done it before but it was a couple of years ago and I forget how I did it.

Do you need to "pose" the room?

I need to be able to have all the walls as separate body parts so the user can hide them (mostly for camera work as some walls may get in the way). So, I guess the answer is yes, I need to pose the room.

By "pose" ... I mean, do you want to be able to move the wall(s) and have them stay connected to the rest of the room, i.e., floor?

You can do it with separate props for the walls and floor.

Import the object into Poser.
Use the Group Editor (Grouping Tool) to make a separate Group for each part of the room.
Now you can "Spawn Props" to have Poser create a separate prop for each Group (object).
Next, parent all the parts of the room to, say, the floor.
Save the floor prop and Select Subset and check all the parts of the room to be included.

Now you can load the room prop and then make each individual part visible or not.

When I import my room with all the material IDs set and then click on the grouping tool, the dialog shows me that everything already is in groups.

What should I being doing from this point?

In that case, you'll still have to use the "Spawn Props" button.
It'll create five props called Floor, L_Wall, R_Wall, Back and Ceiling.
Next step is parenting: parent all the props to the Floor prop (Object->Change Parent)
Then select the Floor prop and open the Hierarchy editor. There's a button "create new figure" on the Hierarchy editor, which should be enabled when you have the Floor prop selected.
Click that button, give your figure a name, and you'll find the figure in the New Figures library of Poser 7.

Before spawning props, do I click on the "Add All" button? Or do I spawn individually?

Well it almost worked. I must have missed a step. I now have a new figure with 2 body parts (Floor and Room).

Here is what I did:

  1. With the Floor selected in the Group Editor dialog I clicked on Spawn props
  2. I closed the Group Editor dialog > Selected Floor Prop
  3. Object Menu > Change parent
  4. Change parent L Wall > Change parent R Wall > etc...
  5. I get the following (pictured above)

Somehow, I think this is wrong. Shouldn't the floor be on top and all the others be indented to represent that they are parented to the floor?

First, you may want to UNparent the Floor from the Ceiling.
Select the Floor and using the pull down menu, Change parent to "Universe."

You want ONE parent (either the floor or the seiling)
Per your graphic, you have the Floor parented to the ceiling.
If you want the ceiling to be the parent (i.e., like the "hip" in a human figure) ...
Then click (on the symbol) for each of the other parts and drag them to the "ceiling so that all objects are parented to the ceiling.
Now, click on (select)  the ceiling and then click on the "Create New Figure" button.
Walla !

The model was created in Max with each box having its own material. That way when I import into Poser, it recognizes each part.

No I did not make separate named Groups and I did not Assign Material for each group.

The image above explains my procedure. Obviously its wrong and too simple. :blushing:
