Subject: Reducing Texture Resolution

momodot ( ) posted Tue, 18 March 2008 at 11:45 PM · edited Sat, 11 January 2025 at 8:58 AM

I am really running out of hard drive space on my laptop which is my only machine so I am wondering if there is a way to bulk down-sample my entire runtime texture folder so all the textures for everything are below a certain maximum size.

This would help me render on my cheap old machine as well I imagine since I did better when Poser let me set a max texture size. If I sample down should the dimension of my largest renders? I never render over 1024 pixels on the long side given I render only for my own amusement now and I just have a 1280x800 laptop screen.

My only concern is props and scenery with many surfaces mapped to one large single image map but I figure I can re-install those if the problem only arises on occasion.

I put "batch+image+resize" into Google and came up with this as well as 334,000 other listings. It may not be exactly what you want, but it would make things easier. One thing that I’ve discovered with software is that anything I can conceive of is already out there and for sell.

I use irfanview for everything but it doesn't seem to batch sub-folders so I have to go folder by folder. I'll check that other link. I used to know how to get Photoshop to batch resize folders/sub-folders but I forgot how.

Is there a way to figure out a rule of thumb optimum max resolution for a given upper limit render size?

Thanks.
