Subject: Z depth and skies

One thing I've noticed when I save a Z depth image from Vue and there's a sky anywhere visible is that it ends up dead white which does horrible things to the lens blur.  I tend to recolour it to a sort of mid grey but I was wondering what you guys do in the same situation.  Do you leave it white, make it a shade of grey or go for black ?

Enquiring minds would like to know

Regards

Frank

I suppose you're referring to Photohsop's Lens Blur filter. I generally leave it alone, as I don't typically add a ton of blur so most of the sky isn't affected. Though if you think of it, whatever the lens blur setting is set at, would appropriately affect the most distant element, which is the sky.

For those interested, I have a Lens Blur tutorial at:

yeah, the only problem is, the sky tends to get whited out when I apply the blur.  I'm probably doing something dumb though.  I'll carry on experimenting I think - thanks for the response Chipp

You could also try selecting the sky in the Z-map, and making it the same color as the area which will be 'in focus'. Then it wouldn't be affected at all when you applied Lens Blur.

That's true as well - plenty to think about now, thanks for the info Chipp.  I'll have a play later on and see what I come up with
