Ok...it's been going on for a long time...finally ticked off enough to ask....

When I click on the second page of a thread....like the LWITG above for example......there is NOTHING on the second page!!!!  So, one has to go back to the first page to read the last posting....

Of course once someone adds another post....it will show up on page 2 as it should.

So, did one of the programmers make a mistake in counting as to the # of posts when the "page 2" shows up?........................................................

I totally agree , We click 2 to go to last page & there's nothing there , highly annoying , Why ? I do not know :s

I know what grad is saying. I have had it happen a few times. You click on last page in a thread and its empty. It seems to happen often with the actual "last page" link for me.

I've yet to encounter this issue. Perhaps it is browser related?

Yes, of course it is browser related ... you have to use a browser to see this problem. 

Let's review the facts ...

1. a thread may hint that there are 2 pages of messages ... e.g.

DITTI March 3,2008
2008 Mar 03 6:24 pm [ Goto Page: 1, 2 ]

1. However, upon accessing the link for page 2, there is no message. 

(this specific example doesn't work right now ... so there ... [grin])

IMNSHO, it would seem that the code that generates the Forum page
and the links to the various active threads generates links to page 1,
... page 2, etc,  ... when there are 30, or 60, or some multiple of 30
messages in the thread. 

OTOH, it shouldn't generate that last link when the count is an
exact multiple of 30. 

Please pass this observation along to "The Programmers".

@Pushinfaders...of course it no longer works for the LWITG thread I identified...because you added a post there today....so, by clicking on page 2....it now, correctly takes you to your post.
But, until you added your post....it showed a page 2, but when you went there....no posts were to be seen.

Here is another example....go click on page 4 of the "Instant Recall" ( 91 posts, last post by mbz2662) thread......nothing there.....

Well, the instant recall thread is NOT a multiple of 30....so....methinks it is length related....
In other words, the length of the thread determines the page numbering change....

but the actual problem in this case is how they count ... do they count from -zero-
... or from -one- or some other beginning?  ... and if more than one programmer
works on a project, do they all use the same starting point???

On a philosophical note, will my opinion about the error count? 
... with the renderosity programmers, that is.  [sly grin]

I see two posts on the fourth page of the thread you mentioned

I go to page 4 of that thread....nothing to be seen...

I use Firefox 3 Beta 4 at home and IE 7 at work I have no problems.  Have you thought about updating your browser?

You don't need to down load it.  My dad is also on a dial up line.  He just emails Microsoft, they send him a CD with major updates for free. Including IE7.

Screen Res is definetly not the problem , Neither is browser , ah well we shall have to put up with I guess!!!

I also see it happen several times each week. 

That's at least 4 different people who see this error happen ... frequently
enough to mention it here.  ... and since no two people on the internet can
agree which browser to use, the error has probably been seen in more than
one browser.  Therefore the problem is neither related to which browser is
being used, nor will it be fixed by changing browsers ... the problem originates
on the renderosity servers. 

Most certainly, it is a consequence of how renderosity calculates that a page
of responses in a message thread is "full" ... when that determination is made,
an additional link is indicated e.g. "[ Goto Page: 1, 2 ]"; or "[ Goto Page: 1, 2, 3 ]". 
OTOH, the renderosity forum code should not indicate that last link unless
there is actually at least one message in that final page. 

BTW this condition heals itself (corrects itself) as soon as an additional message
is posted to the thread.  That might make it difficult for another observer to view the
condition ... but the condition actually does occur.

Ok, I can explain at least one of these..maybe even both..

In the case of the LWITG thread.. there is one deleted message in that thread.. That would account for  the spacing issue.

If a single post gets deleted by either a member or a staff member it remain in the thread..You can't see it however..

I mentioned this defect when the new look was introduced. I even posted it in one of the feedback forums if I remember correctly. Never heard anything more about it. I guess it got ignored.

Like Bruce said. It is not a bug perse. For administrative reasons deleted comments remain in a thread invisibly.

I experience a same thing what Gradient does. Go to regularly to treads like "Instant recall or Post anything" and nothing on a last page I have to click one back. Exctreme anoying. I was reading  a replays here I couldnot find explanation thou. I guess I just keep click back ....

It is not a bug per se.

Whether you call it a bug or not, it is fixable.  The software has to be written
to count the number of messages that are visible to the current user. 
Applying that enhancement will make the page breaks consistent.

That just means they count hidden posts when creating the forum topic index. That should be very easy to fix with an extra constraint on the query.
