Subject: Poser 7 and Vista Home Premium problems

Hello,

I'm sure that someone's posted this before; but can't find a particular thread that addresses this problem.  So here goes.

Just installed Poser 7 about 6 months ago on my new HP media center PC (following are the hardware stats):

Athlon 64 X2 (W) 5200+ 2.6 GHz processor

2GB Ram

RADEON X800 XL video card

My problem is that my copy of Poser locks up every 3-4 renders; even with clearing the cache every boot (and it's set at one); I've updated the video card drivers last week and have shut down/off all unecessary Vista functions to free up processor resources.

Just need to use my Poser 7 for a full-time job; and now that I can do what I love for a living, my PC and my 3d software don't like each other!  So any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm just trying to find a solution before I have a new PC built for 3d specifications and XP Pro-SR2 installed as the OS.  But I'm about at that point right now.

Thanks for reading my first thread, apologies it had to be about this!

Did you install the latest patches for it?

Also the latest ati video drivers are pretty awful for poser7, and many opengl utilites.. last "safe" one I recall is november 2007.

First tip: replace that ATI card by an nVidia card. ATI is STILL lousy when it comes ot OpenGL.
An X800XL - well, that's a fairly old and slow card too. Poser likes a fast OpenGL card for scene setup and preview (doesn't do anything for rendering, by the way).
If you can afford it, an 8800GT based graphics card is very, very good value for money.

If you have "Use External Binary Morph Targets" enabled, you may want to try turning it off.  This is a frequent problem, aside from what's already been mentioned.

Hmm, I have Poser 7 running on Vista Ultimate 64 with no issues to report!!
Have you set all security correctly, running as Admin etc. etc.???
One thing that does lock Poser or any other prog, but particularly Poser is if some of your folders don't have correct permissions set!

This was a bug in early versions of Vista where you could run as admin but folders still didn't have correct permissions, it's been corrected now with windows updates, so if you haven't run auto updates I suggest you do now and check those folder permissions!

Injustice will be avenged.

Actually, ati opengl is excellent.. except for the recent driver issues. April's upcoming driver has a major update coming, and I'm hoping these are just growing pains from that developement.

And Tom's hardware has hand an ati card listed as it's best value under $300 for the last year, and they compared all brands and manufacturers.
