Hi Everyone!

Here's the Challenge for March- "Solitary"

Definition of Solitary according to the Miriam-Webster Dictionary:

1 a: being, living, or going alone or without companions b: saddened by isolation

2: unfrequented, desolate (a solitary seashore)

3 a: taken, passed, or performed without companions (a solitary ramble) b: keeping a prisoner apart from others (solitary confinement)

4: being at once single and isolated (a solitary example)

5 a: occurring singly and not as part of a group or cluster (flowers terminal and solitary)
b: not gregarious, colonial, social, or compound (solitary bees)

I hope this give everyone something to play with. :)

As an example, here's one of my photos with the same name :

Solitary

Of course your interpretation is your own, make it, sad, serious, funny, silly... whatever you want :)
I'm looking forward to seeing what everyone can come up with!

Good Luck and have fun!

I think this theme will be a great challenge!

Let's run this until the last week of March, I will give you a day or so heads up and if anyone needs more time they can let me know.  You may enter an existing work if you like, but we would prefer to see a new work created for this challenge... it IS a challenge after all, lol!  You may enter more than one work, but remember that in the voting, each entry will be judged separately.  Please, please, please put titles on your entries, especially if you have more than one.

Let your creativity flow!!!

What is this? A play on the word "solitary" ?  What exactly is supposed to be offered here?

Hi Thunderstone-

Just look at the definitions and use your imagination. For example you could do a picture of a different coloured flower in a field of flowers all the same colour,  or a bird wheeling silently in the sky. Another example could be a sweeping, empty beach or mountain range.
As I said the interpretation is your own, it can be as sad, serious, silly, funny or thoughtful as you wish.
I hope I've helped to clarify this, any further questions, please do not hesitate to ask. :)

tresamie ( ) posted Sun, 09 March 2008 at 8:21 PM

You could also write a story or poem about yourself or a character who feels alone, who is going through the world in a solitary way.   You could do a 3D image of a single box, ball, house, tree....  You could do a pen and ink drawing or cartoon showing something unusual and singular.  Check some of our earlier challenges to see how they have been answered.

The Sentinel Pine watched alone.

It hadn't changed much in the last century of its life: how much more weathering can a tree endure?  It will be centuries before there is another tree there to keep watch.

hauksdottir ( ) posted Mon, 24 March 2008 at 5:59 AM

Sharen... hi! (and thank you again for the holiday goodies!!!)

We should have until the end of the month or thereabouts.  If folks need a bit longer to finish something, Tresamie is accommodating.  The goal is to inspire us to actually make something, after all.

We can post links to the gallery or smaller images in the thread.  Since the thread image size is only 200 kb, I'll often do both... gallery size with link, and something smaller here so voters have a reminder without having to hunt everywhere.

Given the typical 3d artist, I'm surprised that we haven't had a naked singularity entered yet.  I might have to write a limerick. ;^)

I've never entered a contest here before. Is it just for fun or does the winner get a free $1,000 spending spree in the marketplace?!!

Oh well, it was worth a try.

Seriously though, I uploaded a piece just recently into my gallery which is very apt for this contest. Will it be OK to put it here?

hauksdottir ( ) posted Mon, 24 March 2008 at 5:37 PM

stormchaser,

Sure, go ahead and enter it.  The "prize" is getting to choose the next month's theme.  The theme can range from silly to sublime.  I remember the summer that somebody chose "hotdogs"!!!  I entered 5 haiku and someone modeled a hotdog and there may even have been an overheated pooch amid the barbecue scenes.  Theme such as "Dignity" or "Peace" might inspire something a bit loftier in the way of artistic accomplishment.

The real prize is actually finishing something that's been in the folders or using an item that we bought 3 years ago! *:chuckle:

*TheBryster,

New work is encouraged, but the rules allow for older pieces.  If I've used something for one challenge, I won't reuse it for another (my personal decision), but might link  to encourage others.  A few months ago, we had "Chaos" as a theme.  I'd done an image representing the butterfly effect far earlier for a different challenge.  I wrote a minitut on how the effect was achieved, because randomness is really hard to create, and just linked to it as an example.  Other times I've used previously created work.  The pine I'm entering now was photographed in the early 70s (it died in 1976, during our drought), and I inked it when living in Coarsegold (1982-86).  I'd have to check my records to see what year it was copyrighted, since the half-brain is a bit fuzzy.  (I am disabled with a permanent migraine.)  For this contest, I've scanned and cleaned and framed it so it lives again.

Look at the top of the sidebar (mine is on the right).  There ought to be a label saying "Member Links" and right under that is one saying "Site Mail".  Click on Site Mail.  Recent notes are on the top of the list... click on the message, not the sender, to read them.

OK folks, I've decided to enter my piece 'Alone' which I uploaded to my gallery here recently. It just seems appropriate for this contest. I've reduced it in size for here. This was done in Vue 6 Infinite.

I want to mention the other pics by people here, very inspiring. It's great to see such variety from a single theme & using different methods.

Evielouise, if you are talking about ebots that you recieve at your "personal" email box, be very careful!!!!! There is a phishing scam being used by people trying to get information and to confirm your email so they can send you spam. They even use this site by signing up here, but never uploading any work. So I just make it a policy to never open RR messages from my "personal" email, I always come here to the site first and see if there is a message or comment "HERE".
I have received several ebots saying that a new artist has added a comment or added me to their favorites, but when I get here..... nothing! I hope this helps!!!! :)

evielouis,

Are you clicking on the first link... the one to view the message?

Also, the ebots are often odd.  For example, the ebot saying that you'd posted was sent when you posted, but I was still on site and had already seen your message.  If I hadn't come to check, I'd have missed the ones that were posted after it.

ebots have always had problems here, but it is still the best way to find out if a thread is active.

My cat is calling, so I'd better go see what she wants... but do wish to say that I'm thrilled at all the entries pouring in! :)

tresamie ( ) posted Tue, 25 March 2008 at 10:48 PM

evielouise,

The email that you got is simply a notification that someone posted to the thread you left a message on after you did.  If you do not want to get these emails, you need to uncheck the notice immediately under the place where you type in the message that you are adding to the thread.  It says "Notify me when someone replies" .  If you uncheck it, you will not get the emails anymore.

I hope that helps :)

here's one that comes with a poem... artwork rendered free-hand in powerpoint; poem's mine too...

Rude Awakening

Gossamer dream tendrils

Surrender reluctantly their tenuous grasp upon my consciousness

And I rise

Languidly

To a golden glow and renewed awareness

My senses emerge shyly from the receding mist to envelope me

In the soft staccato of chickadee twittering

Overlaying the melodious rainbow of dancing chimes

Buffeted playfully by soughing breezes

In the sultry aroma of freshly brewed Kona

Intermingling with the hazelnut vestiges

Of last night’s Yankee candle

And in the pillow-perfect caress of my bedding

Imparted to arms and legs splayed carelessly to the four winds

As only the deepest slumber can scatter them

My eyes open as a sloth moves

To the overhead spectacle of a million-mote emissary of this glorious new day

Riding a sunlit shaft from stained-glass window

To the back of my mind

Where it registers as beauty

My arm stretches instinctively leftward, whereupon

One final, brutal awareness seeps into my consciousness

And my heart, flanked by all the dreams it once held

With them in unison whispers a breathy te morituri salutamus

And breaks anew

For you are not beside me

Gazing me lovingly awake

Sharing these exquisite sensations and the prospect of brunch together

And might quite possibly not ever be again
