of the modules, i've been eyeballing the light one for a while, figuring of all of them, that'd be the first i'd buy.

but i didnt have to do it one at a time, and i'm a bit overwhelmed LOL.

Agiel, I can just see something like the portrait of Minsc and Boo with your line across the bottom and a stunning fantasy Vue background behind them and your line across the bottom.  Now all we need is a permission to use Minsc and from WotC.  If it wasn't for the horrible copyright issues it would make a great challenge...

giggles

you folks are baaaaaad LOL.

got a silly question....

has anyone noticed this after sidegrading to pro....

resource usage increases dramatically?

for example... even with a "heavy" scene... with esprit and no modules, my free resources hovered between 50% and 80% (until i rendered, but never dropped below 40%)

now, with all the modules unlocked...

it starts out at 80% free.  i load a scene (or work on one) and it drops to 50% within a few minutes.  I purge memory, it spikes back to about 65% - and then drops within 15 seconds (without me touching even the mouse) down to about 34%.  Purge memory AGAIN - spikes to 55%, down to 34-36%... purge - spike to 45%, down to 32-35%.... it hasnt dropped below that yet, and im rendering with some serious radiosity going on.... it hasnt budged from 34% free resources since i started it about 3 hours ago (the render time just keeps increasing .... YEESH - remind me not to use THAT atmosphere again in an "outdoor" setting) - there's 2 lights, and 100 objects (dont ask me polygon count, cus i cant see it right now and im NOT PAUSING MY RENDER lol)

i know part of the slowness is cus i installed to the wrong folder - i stuck it in the 32 bit side, thinking it was the 64 bit side....(bro never explained the x86 to me... im a moron)  but this resource drop is WEIRD.  its like.... a hole in a water bottle, and i honestly hope my organic memory doesn't do something similar as i age - oh never mind, it already does that, who am i kidding?  LOL

well, i wanted to push my computer....

im doin it LOL =D

just need to uninstall and reinstall in the proper directory and see if that helps things (its not taking advantage of my 64 bits LOL)

after 16 hours of rendering, its at 72%, and has 6 hours to go (which its been saying THAT for... well... 16 hours LOL)   but... from what i see... it looks cooooooooooooooool.

and yes, Frank - its another kitty piccie =-D

hey Frank - didnt i say there'd have to be a great deal for me to be able to upgrade?  and a day later - VOILA!

now, around the beginning of october, i want to see the sidegrade to infinite be half off....

permanent fund dividends come in then =D  (hear me E-on????  i'll have money to spend on your expensive wonderful software then!  make me a deal i cannot possibly refuse LOL)

stormchaser ( ) posted Fri, 04 April 2008 at 8:57 PM

melikia - You've definitely made a good choice to upgrade!
Global Radiosity is a dream. A nightmare to render, but beautiful results! 16 hours so far on a  render you say, that might become the norm if you really want all the bells & whistles in your render!
Try updating your Vue, I remember one time I updated mine & my memory management seemed to improve a little.

melikia ( ) posted Sat, 05 April 2008 at 2:46 AM · edited Sat, 05 April 2008 at 2:49 AM

wll, we're up to about 22 hours now LOL.... 80% complete... and its STILL saying around 5 and a half hours - i wouldnt mind so much if it would quite lying to me.  i had one render i did that took about 2 weeks... total render time was almost 36 hours.  cant remember what atmosphere i had, but i had a lot of water and a semi-transparent dress with a very pearly finish to it - THATS what took most of the time.

and you're half-right, MyCat (btw, your avatar looks like my midnight-kitty - with a little less fluff LOL)... radiosity sets us apart - as does the ability to RESUME a render. =D  (interior pak thread????)

one thing i wish vue had - is the ability to compare renders like poser has.

Stormchaser (do you really chase storms?  if so - that's coool =D ).... the choice to upgrade was made about the same time i purchased/installed vue... within minutes, i decided it was the niftiest program i'd laid my hands on yet.  within hours, i was producing some pretty neat effect - a few days later, people were requesting me to make scenery images for them (family LOL)... its been one of the easiest and most satisfying programs to teach myself how to use (with lots of help from the forum here grins).  poser gave me NIGHTMARES for months (and still gives me terrible fits now and then.... ).... and you're right... so far, what i see of the radiosity in this image - its beautiful =D  ive never even come close to this with poser - and not for lack of trying LOL.

i no longer like rendering in poser.  i dont like the way it handles lights (although the "point at" button is handy)  - there's other things, but the litany of negatives have been played out many many times before - why repeat it? grins

Today, i found one of those wacom bamboo fun graphics tablets at fred meyers for $100 - my mom-in-law gave me hell over christmas because i hadn't told her what i wanted (i ended up with a 5$ mini food chopper and instructions to find something i wanted and tell her LOL).... so, i told her today THIS is what i want - and it can be my pressie for the next 20 christmases if she wants LOL....so, hopefully in the next few days, i'll have a graphics tablet.  =D

anyway... i'm gonna pause the render & save it so i can play for a little bit before bed, then set her back up to finish the danged job - maybe it'll be done tomorrow.  i hope so, cus this is insane LOL.  i cant move vue to the proper directory until im sure this is finished (i dont want any issues)

pads away, singing off-key to a tune she makes up on the spot lalalalala.... spring is in the air..... slow down and pause to stare.... radiosity's everywhere.... it even glistens in my hair.... lalalalala..................................

If you have enough memory, it looks as though Pro Studio has the HyperVue network renderer. In my opinion it's worth setting it up even if you just have one computer, since it lets you queue up jobs to render in the background while you are doing other things on your computer. You can even set up more scenes and render them in Vue!

My avatar was intended to represent my cat, who also has a lot more fluff. Way back when I did the avatar I was new to Poser and couldn't deal with the hair room. Now, well, I still can't :-)

melikia - I love it when people really get into their programs, especially Vue!
Poser is a great program for what it does, & it does it well. I just use it now to setup a scene before the import to Vue. But if people have the money & are serious about improving their renders then Vue & the other highend apps are the way to go. Until Poser incorporates proper GI it just won't cut it with alot of people.
Have you tried rendering with GR, water & blurred reflections with lots of AA. LOL!!
And yes, I do chase storms! 😄

silverblade33 ( ) posted Sat, 05 April 2008 at 8:32 AM

Yeah i'ts great to see someone having a ball! :)

Jsut remember, you cna tweak render settings to reduce or increase time taken, and never use radiosity for outdoor scenes unless you REALLY need it (or have spare PC to leave it rendering on over night...or days, lol)

Use Global Illumination for high quality outdoor scenes (though I just use fill lights, mostly).

I think that E-On's "effort" to make us upgrade to 6 Pro is a significant indication that in September there will be an "Upgrade to 6 Infinite and get 7 Infinite for free" sale (like what happened in Sep. 2006 for the 5->6 transition).

Bye!!!

P.S.: I choose another way: getting bit by bit the modules; I lack only 2 to complete the "collection"...

GIMP 2.7.4, Inkscape 0.48, Genetica 3.6 Basic, FilterForge 3 Professional, Blender 2.61, SketchUp 8, PoserPro 2012, Vue 10 Infinite, World Machine 2.3, GeoControl 2

oh wow... lots of responses,....

we're at 96% completed and it says an hour and 32 minutes left - i'm inclined to think about another 5 hours.... mmmm, about 38 hours total so far (not pausing it yet to find out LOL)

grins

i have 4 gigs of memory, so setting up the hypervue shouldnt be too big a deal - but i tend to pout if i can't see what its rendering giggles

but will have to try that....

MyCat - very VERY cute kitty.... is yours a manx?  mine's a tailless wonder - and a hermaphrodite.  Nature wasn't kind to the poor kitty - she was very premature and its a wonder she survived - but survive she did and chose me to be her human servant-mommy.  as for the hair room - i've ripped out my own hair trying to figure that room out.  more power to those that have succeeded in learning without going bald in the process.

Thelby - i paused the render last night to just play for a little while - created my first ecosystem from scratch and dared to venture into that function editor for a few moments.  i'm addicted =D - and thank you =D

Stormchaser - i agree, its great being around folks who are as enthusiastic about these things as i am =D  my poor family... eyes start glazing over, their skin starts turning to stone.... and responses dimenish to "uhhuh.... "  and yeah, poser IS great for what it does - i used it for years before venturing to the Vue side.  i tried bryce and hated it.  i tried terragen - and got confuzzled, so eventually ignored the program.  3D Studio Max - a friend let me borrow her laptop for a week... within a day, i was ignoring that program in favor of solitaire - i was that confused.  Vue is the FIRST 3D application that i've worked with that has an intuitive interface.  (where would i find this - well, lets look here - yep, there it is!)  poser is now, like you, a means to set up a scene to import into vue =D  something that has completely surprised me is the fact that my chaos-kitty character imports into vue and i dont have to tweak her materials (i could, but she ends up looking "off")  She seems quite content letting the poser shader tree run her materials.  but anything with "normal" human skin - well, its pathetic LOL.  mmmm, GR, water, blurred reflections, and AA.... can't say that i have, but i wouldnt know if i had or not - i rarely pay close attention to which atmosphere i have selected, and i turn around and tweak 'em anyway, so half the time they end up being something completely different LOL.  this is the first one i'v done where i didnt touch the atmosphere settings and used that danged indoor radiosity atmosphere.  thank the heavens i decided AGAINST water..... chasing storms - wow.... i'm one that runs inside at the first sound of thunder.  part of why i love where i am in alaska - we only get maybe 5 or so t-storms a year, and they tend to be very VERY short in duration.

Silverblade.... yep, knew about tweaking the render settings, but didnt think this one would take THIS long.  if it was on hubby's laptop, it woulda bogged down completely by now and only be 1/3 finished.  man, i hope other folks like this image... chaos-kitty is posed rather.... unusually muahahahaha - and i think i just learned my lesson on not using radiosity outdoors LOL.  i dont mind letting a render run for days (i had to with poser numerous times - one poser image with a LOT of reflections & a bit of transparency took a week of rendering - and i got mad, cus at the end, i discovered the girl's eyes appeared to be crossed, which i didnt see until i rendered it large)

alexcoppo.... ooooo yay!  but see, i have to wait for OCTOBER - alaska doesn't distribute the permanent fund dividends until the first week in october (for those who were early signups, like me LOL)  PLEASE e-on work with me on this one????  i wouldnt mind upgrading to 6 infinite then a free upgrade to 7 infinite.....  and i thought i was going to have to get the modules the way you are... one at a time - but when i saw the upgrade for the same cost as that botanica module, i begged hubby for my anniversary pressie early LOL.  (his'll be in the mail in a few weeks... i got him an MP3/MP4 player).... you know... if that great a deal happens in september.... i'll eat a lot of ramen noodles that month to make sure i can upgrade LOL.

hmmm.... this render hasnt budged in 45 minutes.  sighs

its at the point where when it moves, and if i happen to see it.... i squeal with joy, do a happy happy dance, and go "IT MOVED IT MOVEEEEEEEEEEED"

huh... i think  see some sky up in those corners.

for something i thought was gonna be a simple little scene to render, its become a nightmarishly long wait.  V4, posh hair, bushy tail 2, that cool enchanted magic tree castle prop from cornucopia, one terrain with a modified ecosystem, ONE quadratic spot as a filler, and the dratted indoor radiosity atmostphere.  kitty's not even wearing any clothes, and there're no reflections LOL.

stares at the render some more.... man, i love dual monitors

nope, hasn't budged.

come on, give me 97%!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  cheers her computer on  (singing)......
go, speedmonster, go!  (changed it in case of cpoyright issues using the actual lyrics)

IT MOVEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEDDDD!!!! 97%!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

1 hr, 19 minutes to go.... figure 1% every 45 minutes or so..... that means....a little over 2 hours to go chuckles

wonder whats on tv....

pads off humming the tune to speedracer... "go go, speedmonster, go!" (gonna go eyeball tutorials)

My cat is a purebred bastard. aka mongrel. I got her from the humane society adoption center when she was supposedly three years old. The vet says she seems younger. Now I guess she's around eight years old. Still chases my shoelaces when I'm trying to fasten them, maybe she's just mentally younger :-)

Did you know that you can run another Render Cow on a hubby's laptop? (insert "evil" emoticon here)

I started a render today. Five hours later it finishes and I discover that I'm off by one decimal place on the bump strength. Poor DAZ Laura has skin like an alligator. A really veiny alligator. The new render should be finished by midnight.

Renders always slow down near the end if you include human figures, Vue starts from the bottom and based on how long it took to get so far it estimates how long the whole picture should take. Then it encounters the finely detailed trans mapped hair! Just like at my office, the estimates fly out the window.

melikia ( ) posted Sat, 05 April 2008 at 9:13 PM

laughs

ok... Final rendering time - 38 hours, 11 minutes and 48 seconds.

yep - it finally finished =D

and in this case, the hair was at the bottom of the screen LOL.

and yep, knew about putting a render cow on hubby's machine.... but i think he'd kill me.  his computer is also needing to go into the shop.... the battery just died completely, and unless he keeps it plugged in, it forgets everything.  i was hoping to still have my old dinosaur... but it got jealous when i ordered the new machine and up and died on me.

as for vue's render time calculation - after watching it for a long time, i determined it was something like that.... cus render times typically increase to the halfway point, and then drop off after that (until it hits the hair.... or water.... or anything transparent, reflective, transluscent, or just plain cool)

oooo, how about an alligator laura swimmin in the swamps?

and midnight-kitty was an unexpected blessing.... she was about 8 weeks old when i got her, and she still fit in one hand (i have small hands).... now, she barely fits in one arm.  she's also the only cat i know of that actually CALMS DOWN when wrapped up in a blanky.  i started that as soon as i got her... it was either wrap her in a blanky or be clawed to death.  she and i bonded with her wrapped securely in an old baby blanket, and even now, she'll crawl into my lap, turn belly-side up, and wait for me to start talking baby talk to her LOL.  but she now equates the blanky with safety, comfort, and mommy's lap.  we had to live in a house with 2 very small kids, 4 other cats, 2 huuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuge dogs, a psychotic woman (moreso than me), and a very loud man for a while.... midnight spent as much time in my lap as she could.  it was months after we moved out before she settled back down into the fun-loving kitty i knew.

ok, off to play with the image =D

melikia - Can I have what you'ved had, you're hyper, LOL!!

I only mentioned the GR, water, blurred reflections & high AA because that'll make someone's render take an age to complete, just like yours is doing now. I know I tend to have some of my settings too high sometimes, but it's not my fault, it's me brain!
Wait until you really get into working with the materials, I work on virtually all of the ones imported from Poser. I find you really have to, to get the best out of them for your light settings. I find alot of Poser materials come across wrong, too much specular etc.

Although I do like storms my name actually comes from my days watching the Manchester Storm ice hockey team.

BTW - I want 'confuzzled' to be the word of the day!

Storm - you sure can.... i've wanted to be rid of this manic-depression forever grins  ive been in manic phase for about two weeks, thought i'd crashed the other day (and did.... kinda LOL), but it was just my body saying "hey - i dont care HOW hyper you are, you STILL need sleep"  but after having been on medications to "control" the mood swings - and consequently being turned into a zombie - i wont take anything anymore for the drastic mood swings - hubby just runs like hell when "rage" mode hits..... and hides the weapons (drat) (there's a reason we own no real guns)

add some coffee to the mix, and i can maintain this mania for.... mmm... maybe another.... 3 years?

ooooooo, ice hockey fan, huh?  i just got into it, thanks to some free tickets LOL.  local team is the Ice Dogs, and i got snuggled by the mascot for about 15 minutes during one game (much to hubby's amusement turned irritation LOL)... unfortunately, that was also that game that sent me to the ER the following evening.... oops.  only a few weeks out of surgery and i was bashing against the plastic barrier =D looks all innocent-like, whistling

i do like playing with the materials - i FINALLY got parts of the poser material room figured out... enough that i almost have a bundle of textures for the free tink dress by faerie dreams ready to wrap up and (ask to) be beta-tested (am gonna wait to hear responses from the testers before i decide if i'm gonna sell 'em or offer them for free)  my low self-esteem tells me they're not up to seller's standards yet.... another part of me reminds myself its my low self-esteem talking.  so, i decided it'll be up to responses =D

hehehehe, confuzzled as word of the day.... well, here's another one - my mom swears i made this one up when i was really young - i didnt know that, and thought it was an actual word (until my mom corrected me LOL)

Blucky.  Use:  It's a blucky day outside, and I don't want to go anywhere.
Meaning:  Cross between Bleak and Yucky, referring to gray cloudy overcast and slightly drizzly, chilly day.

and wow, Thelby.... thats one heck of a render time.  but its great that the producer loved it =D

and yep, Alaska - Fairbanks to be exact (actually, outside of fairbanks - takes a good 10 minute drive to hit "town".  i love it here.... the scenary is sooooo inspiring (when i get to see it LOL).  downside is the intense winter cold that drags on foooooooorrrrrreeeeevvvvveeeeeerrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.  break up finally hit this week and now everything is slushy and nasty and muddy - and its snowing today.  sighs  i moved here in 99, left in '02, came back in '05 - got divorced within a few months of returning, and met current hubby.  i have no intentions of moving away again.  this is my home, and nowhere else do i get the sense of peace that i do here.
