A few years later, it was french empire. Not much differences in the dresses. This one is double with lace. Strange sleeves no ? They were just attached under the shoulders. And under the dress, the fashion was to wear a kashmir shawl. In progress. You will have to wait a little. How long ? Don't know LOL :-) Serge

Serge, I was just looking last night at the painting of Madame de Recamier. Not only did the ladies of the era wear flimsy gowns in an attempt to look like Greek statuary, they would wet them down so the the folds would cling the same way. It is a wonder that more didn't die of chills! The shawls were lovely, and part of what a lady needed to learn was how to handle one gracefully. Thank you, Carolly

Yup! That was the painting, all right. :) I don't think I've seen that lower right image before, though. Interesting: she is even posed like a Greek statue. I've got a good selection of costume books. It is truly amazing... some of the things we wore in public! There was a similar painting (seated woman) in a museum catalog where they carefully reproduced the pattern from the shawl onto a new shawl for sale in the museum store. It was pretty, but out of my price range. One of the things I appreciate in your work is that you do have an eye for authenticity: clothes which are not only pretty, but right for their period. Thank you so much for everything. Carolly
