Subject: a simple question....

So I've downloaded some free content but I don't understand how to load it into Poser.  Do I have to extract it to a specific location or is there a way to import from within Poser.  I know this is probably very simple but I can't seem to figure it out....

Most freebies come as .ZIP files, and most freebies already have the correct folder structure inside the ZIP file.

If you're using Poser 5 or higher, I recommend the following steps:

  • create a folder "Test" somewhere on your hard disk (you should pick a location that's easy to remember
  • unzip the freebie to the folder "Test"
  • start Poser, and click the "folder up" icon until you can't go any further. You will have two or more folder icons in your library, one of the folder icons will have a red dot. It doesn't matter what library you are in, character, pose, light, it all works.
  • Now click the + button. You're going to add a new runtime. Browse for the folder "Test" and you have your new external runtime.
  • If the freebie is made as it should be made, you can now browse this runtime, and you should have characters, props, poses, maybe lights and materials and cameras, depending on what the freebie contains.

If the freebie works for you, you have several options:

  • unzip the freebie .ZIP file again, this time into your Poser application folder; the items will place themselves in your standard Poser runtime;
  • unzip the freebie again to yet another external runtume folder, which could be useful for organizing your content. *Tip: start organizing your content right away. Over the months/years you'll collect an amazing amount of content, and it's easy to forget where you put what.
*- Or you could leave the freebie in the Test folder and use it from there.

I recommend the second option, for organisation. As for the Test runtime folder, I'd recommend emptying it after the tests are done; now you can use it again for testing another product, free or commercial.

Hope this helps,

Steven.

Thanks so much, I figure it out....however, although I see the items now, when I click on them nothing happens....now, the items are for michael 3 and I'm using the michael 3 that comes with Poser 6 so I don't understand what the problem is.....

Im pretty sure they're for Michael 3...I downloaded it from free stuff earlier today....one of the costumes I'm trying to use is Celebrity Wizard (I think that's what it is)....

Michael 3 does not come with Poser 6. You can download the base figure for free (it's at download.com, don't have the link right here). You will probably need the morph packs to really make use of the freebies you downloaded, and those morph packs are not free. You can buy them at www.daz3d.com

Furthermore, that Celebrity Wizard freebie is most probably a texture set for the Michael 3 Wizard robe. Another item that is not free, you'd have to buy it at www.daz3d.com

Freebies here on Renderosity should state what other items are needed to use them. Most clothing and textures are for the Victoria 3 figure (also a free base figure, but like Michael 3, you need the morph packs available at www.daz3d.com to really make use of the figure) or for clothing for this figure.
So check the details! It should be in there. And if the freebie is for a figure or clohting you don't have, don't bother downloading. You won't be able to use it.

The figures that come with Poser 6 are called James, Jessie (the adults), Ben and Kate (the children). There is not much freestuff for these figures.
