Just change the extension (F2 in the Directory View). BUM files ARE BMP files, but limited to a "green tinted greyscale" - and you CAN use full color bump maps, if you reverse the procedure and change the BMP extension to BMP.

Poser 4 won't use the full color bump maps correctly, though. You're actually best off with the Pro Pack... just feed it a greyscale for the bummap and it uses it... no conversion B.S.

DraX, someone did an essay on how Poser handles color in bitmaps. It does some strange stuff, but it does read the colors - not "correctly" but it does. I don't remember if that post was at this site or the Poser Forum (this was before the last split, so it might not even be in archives anymore).

but if ya actually need to convert them, use Acdsee, its a shareware image viewer frmo the same url as its name, just open the bum file and choose save as. Ken

Ken, I think Vornado was actually asking how to convert not just the image type from bumpmap to bitmap (because both ARE standard bitmaps), but on how to translate the palette back to the correct greyscale values... reversing the bummap process carried out by older versions of Poser (i.e. non-ProPack)

DraX ( ) posted Mon, 18 June 2001 at 4:36 AM

...you don't mean that ACDSee can convert the palette correctly, do you?

Wizzard ( ) posted Mon, 18 June 2001 at 4:57 AM

in that case.. just pull it into almost any graphics programme.. drop the colour depth to grey scale...

DraX ( ) posted Mon, 18 June 2001 at 5:15 AM

Wizzard, I've tried that... Poser uses the bumpmaps in some kind of strange fashion.... the palette isn't jsut changed to a grey... it's a very strange palette that is applied to it.

KenS ( ) posted Mon, 18 June 2001 at 5:17 AM

Acdsee wont revert the pallet,at least not that Im aware of. but just for simple file conversion it works like a charm. Ken

ko.. what precisely are you trying to do? in POser the bump maps are created and tagged as *.bum they use a red/green scale for lift and depression.. if ye change them to .bmp.. the poser rechanges it back into a .bum.... if you're using them for another application... then with some you can greyscale them.. and still keep the bump characteristics.. so I guess the key question would be which app?

That would not work, a bum is 'double embossed' and therefore not identical to the original file. You would need a 'un-embosser' to get the original back. For how the colors work see UCB mapping on this site http://home.online.no/~kjellil/ucbmapping.htm

Thus another reason I use Poser Pro.... it properly reads greyscale bumpmaps.
