At your own risk you can mod your "normal" card into a "workstation" one.  Not sure if poser would benefit from it but your milage may very.

Unfortunately the only GPUs that mod works with is those from the 6-series and below, like 6800, 6600 and so on. On all newer series, while you will get that 'quadro' in the GPU name, it wont actually enable any of the quadro features in the driver.

This can be confirmed by opening your driver settings and looking at the 'profiles' list. In real quadros (and successfully soft modded geforce) that list contains entries for 3D apps instead of games, like you will have profiles for 3DS MAX, Maya, XSI and so on. If the list still contains only games, then the mod hasn't worked.

NVidia caught on.

Yep they don't want people converting their cheapass gaming cards to $1000 quadros so they physically removed the hardware that the mod works on in their new chips.

But if you can get your hands on a 6800 ultra or similar (which is dirt cheap these days) you can still convert it successfully into a very nice Quadro FX 4400.

Only if that 6800 is based on an NV40 chip. The NV43 chip (used in all but the very first PCI-E 6800) is already hardware disabled.

This weekend Fry's electronics is advertising EV3A e-GeForce 6200 256 AGP for $45.00 with a $45.00 rebate!  Can that card be Quadro-ized?

The 6200 is newer than the 6800. Probably based on the NV43 chip, or later. So - probably not.
