If only everyone would shake off their shackles and understand - but they don't know they have them. I'm with you all the way, but could never have expressed it so eloquently!

I'm not an expert, but wouldn't it be easier and safer to mount horse, then pick up lance?

Certainly, but Poser's UI won't let you do it in that order. ;)

IMHO,

I have a definition, refined over some time, which sums up my opinion regarding "Art." -

"Art is a human creation which attempts to convey more meaning than that which is purely represented by only the sum of its parts."

This definition fits every "artistic" endeavor.  It also differentiates between visual pictures meant only for titilation (pr0n) because it differentiates between the artist's intent and the viewer's experience.  It removes catalog ads and screenshots of such things as models which only serve as descriptive representations of the product pictured.  However, it does include "bad" art.  That is "art" in which the artist intended to represent something more than the sum of its parts but failed, horribly.  They may have failed, but it is still "Art" even if its terrible.

The key point in defining all "Art" is that it relies solely on the intent of the Artist and NOT the reaction or interpretation of the experiencer. Most people can't get over that one small part of critical reasoning.  One must be exceedingly careful in differentiating between what one believes to be worthy of the title "Art" and one's own bias in interpretation.  There's plenty of Art out there that I can't stand.  But, simply because I don't like it or the message wasn't accurately conveyed to me, due to my own bias and experiences, doesn't disqualify it as being "Art."

Context is also important and can radically change purely representational/illustrative pieces into true "Art."  Consider - A picture of a trashcan in a litter strewn alley taken by a news photographer to show evidence of the problem a city has with cleaning up its messes can be turned into "Art" by a good columnist that pairs the picture with a literary piece which seeks to link the picture with underlying social problems in the city.  In context of the article, the picture becomes "Art" because the columnist attempts to use it to communicate much more than the sum of its parts.  Paired frequently enough and reinforced by reference, the picture can turn into its own masterpiece (Such as the infamous Vietnam era execution picture.)  However, neither the original trashcan and alley nor the picture taken by the photographer were true "Art" to begin with.
So, there you have it - My two coppers.  Worth every penny you paid to read them. ;)

Certainly, but Poser's UI won't let you do it in that order. ;)

That's a serious problem, too......it's quite difficult to reach down and pick up a lance that's lying flat on the ground while sitting astride a High Horse.  This is especially so when the horse is skittish by nature, and keeps flinching and moving around the entire time.........

Yep -- the horse is long since dead.  And that's why "great minds" have been arguing over the corpse for millenia.  In fact, they were arguing about it long before Don Quixote was written.  They were even arguing about it before online forums existed to argue about it in.

I wonder if Miguel de Cervantes was given to tilting at windmills because he held opinions which went against many of the widely accepted mores of his day?  Interestingly -- Cervantes treated Quixote as an inherently honorable figure: just delusional.  The difference in our own era being that the Quixote's of today are dishonorable ......while still remaining delusional.....unlike Cervantes' admirable idealist of a man.

All idealists (of whatever stripe) are Quixote's by definition, I suppose.

Odd, though -- the windmill-tilters come in all shapes, sizes, and flavors.  It's a great participatory sport in the forums -- and the Art of it hasn't died, even if the horse has.  At least we can see that it's alive & well so long as there's a hobby-horse-riding champion remaining to bring the subject up again..........

Not that opinions on this -- or any other -- subject are automatically bad things -- because they aren't (sometimes).  It's just that one Quixote's windmill-tilting activities are the moral equal of any other's......and therefore equally as valid.

Uh......Poser?  😉

It's official -- everything has been solved, and the Final Word spoken -- so we can now ignore any and all further posts -- including blogs -- on the subjects in question.  They're all moot before they're even typed -- there's no need to discuss them any further.

So now that we've gotten past all of that: it's time to go back to arguing over politics...........which we'll also resolve & wrap up just as neatly and with a Final Word as we have these topics.

Politics -- where attempts to "stop the bickering" are just another -- albeit subtle -- attempt to dominate the debate.  Triangulation is a great ploy -- it's a way of Arguing From Above -- while denying that what you are doing is arguing at all.  It's a ploy that even fools some.

BTW - DAZ does rule the world.

Sancho went on to bigger and better things.  Sancho wanted his own horse, and his own windmill to tilt at -- so he quit the squire's job.  He had problems with picking up the lance on his own, though.  😉

I guess that he needs to hire a Sancho.........

Nah - that'd never happen.

To be honest, I never really wrote it to quell anything once and for all. Just did it to provide a handy URL to point at - for anyone who's sick of seeing long and loud diatribes over something that has been beaten down to the sub-atomic particle level by now.

And no Xeno, I'm no authority on anything regarding the philosophical. I just seem to have the ability to string together words in a way that's fairly coherent once in awhile.

BTW - anyone know the URL to that marketplace item that showed a bondage hood (complete with zippers)? I've got an idea concerning it...

Most of us have that ability -- once in awhile.

snort  I've heard it said that great minds think alike........but I have to say that it's an extremely odd suggestion to make, considering......well, never mind.  Won't go there.  Other than to say that what's good for the goose is also good for the gander.  😉  The implications of doing something on a regular basis oneself -- and then criticizing others for doing essentially the same thing.......that's quite odd.

Posting opinions in the forums always carries with it the risk of receiving a response -- perhaps even a response which comes from a contrary position.  That fact doesn't trouble me.  If I start a thread on certain topics -- then I would do so fully expecting to hear from others who take a different point of view from my own.  In fact, this happens on a regular basis -- even in purely technical threads.  And not just in this forum, or on this site -- I've found it to be true wherever I happen to browse through forums.  Of course, I realize that things would be a lot easier if only those who didn't agree with me would just be quiet & go away.....but they've yet to do me that favor.

Another option is non-participation.  Which is a perfectly legitimate choice to make.  And many people make that choice -- which is fine.  But expecting to participate, and then to have everyone line up in perfect agreement with me.......?  Not in this world.

I'm a firm believer in OT being the spice of this forum.  If OT weren't allowed at all, then we might as well close the Poser forum down entirely, and shift all purely Poser-related traffic over to the Poser Technical forum.

The traffic levels would sink like a rock.

But of course:

Maugre thine head, I defy thee for to reck aught of mine intent.....for to heede the deep hast forsooth need of mien thrust anon in tomes of ancient wisdome, which covereth in such glorie!  For why wouldst thou seek to fathom that which escapeth thee, which compasseth not thine divers dispense amongst divers causes?  Let the recompense abide enow: know to seek, know to discover.  Mell with thine own matters -- I say it for thine avail.  Mayhap thou shalt turn thee again with thy worship.
