Subject: May Genre Challenge

bclaytonphoto ( ) posted Sun, 04 May 2008 at 9:25 PM · edited Wed, 31 July 2024 at 8:34 AM

Starting with this month (May 2008)

We are "starting over" with the Genre Challenge. Since the challenge began over a year and a half ago, we have covered most of the genres that would work for us as Photographers.

The other important note is that from this challenge forward..
**You must shoot the challenge entry no earlier than one month prior to the start of the challenge.

**So, to post an image for this months challenge..It can't be from your archives.. It must be no older than April of 2008.

If asked, you must be able to provide the EXIF data from your entry..

With that out of the way...

I gave our last winner the choice of any Genre..

His choice was **Photo Manipulation

I know we did that gnre not too long ago...But...It was the winner choice..

You can see some examples in our gallery HERE

I'll try to get the challenge page completed tomorrow**

Thanks, Bruce.  And the requirement for EXIF is a good one to date the images.  Film shooters may want to contact the mods....my suggestion, not theirs.     Folks not knowing how to save EXIF may want to see the thread on the current forum page. And, most digitals will save EXIF with menu options to even show you how to see it when shooting.

Best wishes to all in this challenge.       TomDArt

Please remove my submission. I did not read the rules completely and my submission does not fit the requirements.
I will make another entry!
Thanks.

With photomanipulation two points come to mind:

The work involved in manipulating the image is the work (generally) - thus is it the manipulation which needs to be done in the timescale, or do you have to take the photo's as well in that timescale?

Semi-related to the above: Does it have to be your own photography entirely? (a lot of manips i have done used free stock images)

Obviously these Q's are only really applicable to the current challenge.

I can see the benefit of the idea of the date/exif condition, it will force people to think about the challenge when out shooting during the month :) Nice job on implementing that!

stock images should not be used...However  did not specify this...I would prefer you use your own work..but given the nature of this months challenge..and that it's not specified..I can't reject an image because of this..

However...I will have to add a no stock image clause..next month...

It's prefered that you shoot for the challenge..I know it's kinda weird to have this be our first challenge with the added rules..But..it just kinda happened this way..

In future versions, this won't be as much of an issue

On a personal note...I don't like having a lot of rules, because IMHO, it takes away from the spirit of the challenge..

Be Honest..try to go out and create something for the challenge..it's more about challenging your self, than winning a compettition..But..that's the way I think..

Your free to decide how and why you want to enter

My reason for entering any of the challenges is not to win..to get some votes is a bonus!  The idea is to get to try a genre I don't pursue often.   That is an educational and fun process. Sure, if the genre is one I do more often, I will enter but the ones which challenge me are the new directions and that is fun to try..even if the shot is not so hot.

Same as above. For me it was about trying out a new style and pushing myself to work faster and differently than before. While the main image is mine I did get some cg textures to help with the parts of my entry.

You can of course make any rules you like, but restricting it to such a short recent time may be prohibitive for some people. Like if you have a demanding job. If you're physically disabled. Such pressure of time may help some people  achieve better results, but for me taking photographs is for fun and relaxation. If there is a 'hurry up already' element in this activity too - I wont participate.
If I thought about the specific subject of the competition, and produced something worthwhile showing off, why does it matter when I did it?
As a compromise, could you make the limit something like a year? many art competitions require that work be 'recent'  but define it as 1-5 years...

Sorry if I sound rude, I didnt mean to, but its frustrating.

Ok..even tho this is the thread for the last challenge.....................

Images get posted to the contest page..by using the contest page format, it allows us to post larger images..

The rules are mostly not a personal choice by me or any other staff member..They are a result of discussion and request by the community at large..

It not so much a "hurry up and shoot" as it's about   "here's an idea"  what can you do with it.????..
