Hello,
I´m starting to experience the wonders of the dem files and i´ve been asked to make a flight by a hundred of miles river wich lead to this question. How can i solve the scale issue? Do i work my model in the real scale or shall i reduce it ? What´s the best way to work with extensive dem files?
Thanks
the alaska files have major issues - being in alaska, i wanted to use them - but the largest area i EVER managed was about the size of my yard RL - and thats not even 1/8 of an acre.
if anyone ever succeeds in getting larger ones to work - please let me know. i'd dearly love to be able to do the McKinley range.

Hello Paul,
Thank you for contacting the USGS EROS. We have two elevation products for areas outside of the U.S.
They are SRTM and GTOPO30. SRTM has the best resolution at 90 meters. You can find out more information on these products at: http://edc.usgs.gov/products/elevation.html
Have a great day!

Hi Paul,
We have 2 Arc Second (60 meter) data for Alaska. When you are on the Seamless website, and you click on the triangle beside Layer Extent, the section will expand. You can place a check mark in the box beside 2 Arc Second and the map will refresh to where we have 60 meter data available. If you want to download the data, just click on the download tab at the top right, uncheck 1 Arc Second and place a check mark in the box beside 2 Arc second.
Thanks
Laura

size does matter (mostly in rendering times). The following thread discuss how scale matters with renders...

100 miles ?(I hope you have a professional renderfarm).....
right off the bat ...it would be unlikely you woul be able to populate a 100 mile stretch of land with trees....(Im having problems with just a small moutain range)...maybe you render it out as a tilable matte painting?
good luck

Hi checkthegate,
Thanks alot for your tips. They really are helping me out in trying to solve this HUGE problem.
I´m already waiting for the dem file of the portuguese river - starts in Spain and ends in the Atlantic Ocean on the portuguese coast - so i´ll keep you informed about the development of the process.
I´m really waiting to start this work, feeling that VUE XSTREAM is the best software to make it with superior quality.
Thanks,
P.S.- i´m from Portugal and i appologize for some english mistakes.

Ive been working with DEMS lately and they are addictive! You can play around witj the terrain editor...all you want....but reference me a geological type and I can find it on the map and import it in 30 secs as opposed to messing with the terrain editor. (talk about impressing a post sup or art director)
I have been having problems downloading with international DEMS from the USGS
I would love pick up some cool islands from fiji...but when I try to download...it says data unavailable?
anyone else have problems like this?
