When I first set up home in Wales in 1989 there were three counties that didn't permit pubs to open on Sundays. But the law stated that if you could get 500 signitures on a petition you could demand a referendum to force a vote on the matter. The good thing about this was that the powers that be stated that if the people voted FOR the opening of pubs on Sundays the petition thing had to be revoked so that the question could never be raised again.
By a landslide the people voted For the motion and pubs have been opening on Sundays ever since.

dang...good memory. I was 'nu-be' for about a year (01-02)...so it could be more. They deleted the user name (I was more considerate than 'gadfly', which I wanted to use...;) so I couldn't check on that. I was a lurker for awhile, so I didn't post for a couple of months...
