Subject: Reflections ignore displacements?

Can any kind person explain this please? The attached piccie shows Elsa's feet reflected in two vertical mirrors set at right angles. The floor is not a smooth reflective surface, as can clearly be seen from the direct reflections. But the floor reflections seen in the vertical mirror are in sharp detail. I increased to 4 raytrace bounces in the render but it made no difference.

Why???
Thank you!

It doesn't understand displacements from what I understand. It is a long standing glitch that hasn't been fixed.

Hmmm, I thought you died a long time ago.
Thanks!

Correct, there are situations where displacement is not picked up.

For such a small effect, you should/could use bump instead of displacement. All will be fuzzy then.

I just re-checked that scene, and found that there is no displacement on the floor at all, or bump. The distorted reflection comes from a 'softness' setting of 1.0 on the Reflect shader.
So it seems the second raytrace bounce ignores that setting. When I get a moment I'll try bump on the floor instead.

It might be that you have to add raytrace bounces to the render if it isn't bouncing from the floor to the sides etc.

I thought 4 raytrace bounces would be plenty for just 2 reflections. I'll just try it with 5 or 6 when I get a moment. Thanks.

I call misleading information!

The number of bounces will not matter. The number of bounces controls one thing only - how many times should Poser spawn yet another ray to handle a reflection or a refraction.

We can already see reflections of reflections - this takes only 2 bounces - there are enough bounces. That is not the issue.

I said it might be :) Some people try to do it with one bounce without knowing.

OK GoM!

:)

This comes up a lot though - it's a very simple thing. How many bounces?

Here is 0, 1, 2, and 3. Three is enough for this scene.

However, did you know there is NO cost to setting it too high? Meaning, if you don't need the extra bounces, it doesn't do them. So set it to 20 and forget about it. Then you'll never wonder if you have enough.

Unless you do a room full of glasses in front of mirrors. Then you may still need more. :)

I'm busy drinking again. Somebody should just try what I said in the beginning :)

Thanks for the explanation about number of raytraces, bb.

I just finished your tutorial about reflection and refraction - followed it right through with no problems, apart from the initial setup of the skydome, which was down to me not reading properly (now don't laugh - I had it casting shadows). Good stuff, thank you!

I have not had time to try bumpmap on the floor. I'll have a quick render before bed. I can hear my teddy calling me now, but he'll have to wait a bit.
