There is a toon character I was considering buying but to be honest I would probably use it in only qne or two renders and it isnt cheap so Ive held off. I now see that there are some PSP clip files up in freestuff using this character. I have used the occasional clip in my renders, mainly of vegetation, which I have made myself but I wondered about the use of clips made with a commercial figure which I dont actually own. The toon would only be a peripheral character in any render, just an extra so to speak, so these clips would be ideal but I just want to make sure Im not breaking any rules.
As Rendo have allowed the clips I presume it`s ok? Maybe the license for the figure allows for this.

Without being 100% sure, i think that you can use the clips as you see fit, as long as they aint copyrighted. The character copyright is bound to the use of the character it self and not the images and clips its used in. However its only a guess so might be wrong :)

Online Now!

that is an interesting question, isn't it?
if it were possible to find tubes or clips of all that Poser stuff, you wouldn't really need to own anything and just use the clips.

What does the original product license say?

I believe its a case of its legal but it stinks. Read the readme carefully , there are a few around that are for personal use only , not commercial.

Not necessarily stinky, only if the tube set is renders from every possible angle and in every possible pose, so that one need not buy the product at all. Then it would be an unfair & unethical use of the item. A few models that I would not ordinarily buy since I'd thought they were of limited use came to my attention by way of tubes/clipart sets. Having gotten a taste of the products, I could see the potential in them and pretty soon they found their way into my runtime. I am now broke because of all those "free tubes" but I'm sure the artists and Daz /Whomever are delighted at all the sales they get after I've seen a product of theirs in So-And-So's tube set then rushed right out to buy.

Your mileage may vary, of course. But do check the readme first, some sets are not for commercial use.

Thanks for the advice. its all a bit academic at the moment because I cant find out how to use these clips in PSP. I know about tubes but these are psp files.
Any pointers to a tute or advice how they work?

Just open the file with Paintshop Pro. Then you can select each layer and export it as a tube or copy/paste it into your render. You can also save the whole thing as a .psd file which works with any  graphics program that has Photoshop compatibility.

If this is the toon set I'm thinking of, btw, there are 42 layers in all. That's a lot of tubes. And they are rendered in enough poses that, were I to use more than a few, I'd consider buying the model just to be on the safe side. Especially for any commercial work.

Thanks byrdie, got it now. I didnt have the layer pallette open before and all I could see was the first title pic. New to PSP and layers. Great fan of Micrografx Picyure publisher but thats so old its coded in Latin. No layers. Thought Id better get up to date.
I agree with the sentiment regarding constant use and thats probably the way Ill go. Commercial work? I should be so talented! LOL
