Subject: Best Ways To Get Clothing & Body Parts To Cast Shadows On Character?

Isyl ( ) posted Tue, 17 June 2008 at 8:57 PM · edited Tue, 26 November 2024 at 8:43 PM

What is the best ways and best settings to get SOFT, LIGHT shadows on your character in Poser 7. I want clothing and other body parts to cast soft, light shadows on the body of my Poser character. I'm not having much success in getting the results I want. What settings are the best for these types of shadows? Do I use Ray Trace Shadows or Depth Map Shadows? What are the best settings for Shadow Blur Radius and Shadow Min Bias (which I'm not even sure what that setting does )? Can anyone give me some suggestions on how to get clothing and body parts to cast light, soft, natural looking shadows on my characters? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. 😄

Sometimes it looks like clothing is just hanging there with no shadow effect on the body.
I'm not sure if this is what you want with "light shadows" which might have more to do with shadow settings, but if you add ambient occlusion to the body parts in question you'll get a much more realistic effect with body/clothing interaction.
By default, the AO node is way too high so turn it down to lower values for clothing/body.

This might be helpful.

Ambient Occlusion is your answer. Check out this thread:

Hi !

You can also try to render with lights casting ray tracing shadow and change the shadow bias to 0,22, may be this value is the most usefull for render shadow with detail like lace or string ...

It's just an idea ...  Let's try !

Also, remember that you can set shadow blur even when using ray-traced shadows, and that you can also (on a per-light basis) set the shadow strength.

I've read the tutorial that ashley9803 suggested and I am reading through the thread on AO at the moment, and I'm embarrassed to say I'm getting more confused as how to do AO in the Material Room. I've only had Poser 7 for a few months now and have only used the Material Room a few times for simple things like changing the color of textures. I know adding AO in the Material Room will probably be quite easy to do once I get it, but so far I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around it. So far the things I've tried have rendered brown vertical streaks, I guess maybe where there are supposed to be shadows. If I want a hand or a ribbon to cast a shadow on the characters body, where do I add the AO node? Do I add it to the skin, even if it's a ribbon on the clothing? And how do I get crease shadows on the clothing? Need help please, in an easy step by step example if possible. Like I said, I'm a newbie to Poser and have no previous experience in 3D art. Please help, I think my head is about to explode.
