I haven't had a chance to try this yet, but there is now a way to capture 3D models and their textures on a PC using 3DVIA Printscreen. It saves the files as XML and I don't believe that there is an easy way to convert that format to a more common one. I found a few forums where people are working on a conversion program, but can't recall whether there is a final robust version that does the job well.

I don't understand its use. Are you telling this can create an entire obj and texture map in a snap?

Yes.

I haven't had time to try it, but it can capture an object or figure from a game being played on a PC or from a website with embedded 3D objects. I've seen examples of objects captured from Halo on the 3DVIA site.  Once somebody develops a good conversion program that can save the XML file to a 3DS or Obj file, it will be a very cool program to have.

the game vendors may have legal concerns upon seeing their characters ripped from
copyrighted/trademarked games, but then the ripping software itself can't be considered illegal,
in the same way folks are allowed to buy guns, but not allowed to use them illegally AFAIK.
I ain't a lawyer.
