Subject: Convert to Lower Versions

3Dillusions ( ) posted Sat, 05 July 2008 at 11:34 PM · edited Wed, 20 November 2024 at 11:56 PM

Hi

Looked at the forum but did not see if this question has been answered.

I recently started use CS2, figured out where everything is so far, except for this preference.

How do you make sure that Photoshop saves Files say like PSD or PNG which I prefer so that when my products are released all photoshop users from PS7 and above can use them?

As I save everything in PNG as PSD Files in CS2 will not open in my version of Paintshop pro where I do all my corrections and conversions?

Thanks

Angela

Save as>.png>OK  should do the trick, I really don't see what the problem is. PS saves automatically as a .psd and only saves as something else when you go to Save As.....then you select which format at that point. What has me curious is why you'd want to do corrections and conversions in a less powerful application than PhotoShop[PSP].. ...

Because I am forced to save as PNG but want the option of multi layers in PSD, but for me to open then in Paint shop pro and the reason I am using it and don't take me wrong its not a less powerful program lol.  Also the PSD version in PS CS2 will not open in my version of PSP, if I made it backwards compatible they would.

It does all that PS does except you can find all the gadgets not spend days trying to figure out what idiot wrote the actual file structure for Photoshop, seriously now I know why beginners say its a hard program to figure out.  And PS CS2 has the beauty of actions and styles which I cannot make in PSP :)  So for me its the best of both worlds I do not subscribe to the snob theory in graphics programs.

As for the help file, um not much help their either.
As I have used PSP for about 10 years its quicker for me, but PS does better in the 300 DPI than PSP.  Either way I should be applauded that I can use both programs, not told its a lesser quality, which it is not and never was.

So my question is again How do I make PS CS2 compatible with PS7 so all my future files  can be open by all Photoshop users?

Well my next suggestion would be to write Adobe and ask them to make it compatible with PSP which I'm sure they''d be happy to do...But seriously I see no way around this personally.
I did not mean to dis PSP as I also use odd programs that I've used for ages and no one disses me on them so I apologize for hurt feelings on that regard.
As a non PSP user I have no idea why it will not open PS CS2 layered files...do you have the latest registered version? would be my first query as I understand they do try to keep up to speed. Apparently it does not do all PS CS2 does as it won't open PS CS2 files so I guess my suggestion would be to post the actual problem you are trying to solve here and maybe some PS CS2 wizard can help you figure it out.
If you don't have up to date versions of both programs you can't expect backward compatibility...especially from Adobe....not too big on that I hear when dealing with a cross app situation. For some reason they don't seem to feel bound to keep other, and competing apps, up to date with what they do... ...

Go to File>Preferences>File Handling…and where it ask “Maximize PSD and PSB File Compatibility”, select “always”.

What that does is (from the PS help)…
“When saving a PSD, you can set a preference to maximize file compatibility. This saves a composite version of a layered image in the file so it can be read by other applications, including previous versions of Photoshop. It also maintains the appearance of blended layers in the future. “

Of course some functions unique to Photoshop (such as Styles, etc.) won’t be usable in PSP.

Too cool Swamp...thanks for jumping into this. I pretty much only use PS and Irfanview for my image manip needs and actually don't mess in preferences much except for guides, cursors etc. as compatability isn't an issue. This should answer 3Dillusions' query quite nicely.. ...

Angela .. You have used PSP for 10 years. Of course you know your way around it. If you had used PS for 10 years you would know the full power of PS. I'm sure when you started PSP you were searching around for days on how to do certain things. Get to know the full potential of PS and you won't need to go back to PSP.

Sorry but I don't subscribe to the theory that any program is better than the some other, I will use both and be happy with the money I spent on them, because if you lived in Australia and saw the prices they charged us for Software you would not be saying one was better that the other, lol

You would be thankful you could get your hands on a copy at a reasonable price.

PSP is my comfort zone, love my tubes and all,  as for Photoshop you can save but where the heck can you store them in the program haven't found that out yet lol,

And if you say it does not have the ability like PSP to save your stuff within the program so you can use it, then for me its worthless,

Selling price for CS3 is 1,800 dollars here in Australia, I would love to see any American pay that price for anything without screaming, thank god for my friend who bought me a legal copy of CS2 on eBay in England, long live the queen

I could tell by the font size what you think of my comments :) . Now that you do have CS2 you have to give it a proper chance. I have used many graphics programs including PSP. Each software has it's strengths and weaknesses. It takes time to find the strengths of each for your particular needs.

LOL

No I had to make the font size bigger as its really small on the forums and I added so much that I did not want you to go blind reading the silly thing.

Seriously I love them both and will use them both :)
Its nice to add different skills and for me its a joy to use it.
Even is they added some many things to it, that seem bizarre at first LOL.
