Subject: Importing Raydream Shaders. Anyone know how?

Bookem0328 ( ) posted Thu, 10 July 2008 at 6:15 PM · edited Wed, 13 November 2024 at 4:47 PM

Hello. I am working on a project that I created a couple of years ago and now the client wants to change a few things around while keeping some things the same. I know this may sound weird, but I was still working with Raydream Studio 5.1 when I created this scene and have now moved on to bigger and better programs with Carrara 6 Pro. I like it a lot, but I would really like to import the 300+ texture mapped shaders that I had created over the years from Raydream into Carrara. Not only to keep using some of them, but to render the objects through Carrara as well. Anyone know if this is possible and how to do it? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Looks that Carrara can import Raydream files, so open Raydream add some objects and shade them...them open in Carrara. Just my 2 cents.

I have not seen any utilities to do that.  I had the same issue when I went from Raydream 5.1 to Carrara 3 a few years ago.  I just opened the RDS files in C3 and then saved the shaders after Carrara converted them to load the file.

I said this in case you dont have objects with the shaders applied to it...but the scenes will import fine.

Yeah, I tried to open the actual models hoping the shaders would follow, but C6 doesn't import the textured shaders. Then I tried opening a new folder with all of my shaders in it through the shader browser. No shaders in that folder showed up at all. I noticed the shaders' extensions from RDS  were .brw and C6 shader extensions are .cbr. So, I tried to change the extensions from .brw to .crb and that didn't work. The shader files actually showed up in the folder this time, but no textures. And before anyone asks, yes I had the tiffs that were imported for the shader in the folder. Guess I'm screwed unless anyone has any other ideas. Thanks for the thoughts already.

CBR files are TXT files (sometimes they are ziped, so just rename to zip and open it), so you can open in a TXT editor. Take a look at the CBR file and the Randream file in the TXT editor...maybe some change in code can make the file sopen in Carrara. Sometime just correting the image file paths in the TXT files make everything work again.
