Subject: Anyone up for taking on a gill project?

This is a character I have recently created. She is an aquatic elf....the thing is I cant find any gills. I tried to just put them on her skin texture but that looked really tacky. If anyone has any suggestions or would like to make me a neck morph I would really appreciate it, as I do not have the technology to make one myself. For thoughs who would like to try it, there would just be three flaps of skin on both sides of the neck. Thanks a million. Namanie

Can you send me a sketch of how you want the gills to look? Even a render of the tacky texture would help. (I bet its not that tacky :)

If you could just give me your e-mail I would be happy to send you a rough. I cant seem to get my mail thingy to work from here so it has to go through my hotmail address. Thanks. Namanie

Or I can just send it to you through this. Here is a rough draft. It's not the original texture. I just took a render of her neck into photoshop and drew on it. I think you can kinda get the idea. Thanks again. Namanie

My free mermaid and sea nymph figures have gills almost exactly like that. You could probably transfer the neck to your figure.

Namanie ( ) posted Fri, 22 June 2001 at 2:15 PM

I'm kinda new at this. How exactly would I go about doing that? And...where can I get them?

It looks like your figure is based on Posette, which the mermaid and sea nymph are also, so the neck will be a good fit, at least in theory. There are links to sites where you can get the figures on my downloads page. Actually using the neck on Posette would require some work, basically creating a new .cr2. If you don't mind your girl having flippers instead of feet, you could transfer your character morphs and textures to the sea nymph and use her as is. Otherwise if you want her to have feet I could help you put together a new character.

Namanie ( ) posted Fri, 22 June 2001 at 2:40 PM

That would be great. The flippers I don't mind as long as they are small enough to fit into shoes. Yes she is based on the poser 4 female. With a few other morphs. This is my first character so I would really like the help. Thanks a bunch!! Namanie

Last minute thought.......Do you have webbed fingers also?

dcort ( ) posted Fri, 22 June 2001 at 3:00 PM

The flippers are too big for shoes, unfortunately. When I made the sea nymph I didn't figure aquatic figures would have much use for footwear. :) Webbed fingers would be difficult to make work very well in Poser, due to Poser's limitations on joint setup. The nymph and mermaid don't have them. Maybe in a future version of Poser this will be more practical, because it would be very cool. Feel free to e-mail me if you want to talk about setting up the character in more detail.

Kinda OT, but if you're looking for a D&D game to try your sea elf in, I'm recruiting ;) Email me at aeolius@triad.rr.com, for more info.

I just completed making a Posette with gills. If anyone else would like to have her, you can download her using the link. Requires Mover. Sorry about the password, but I'm trying to keep mass downloads away. For the same reason, I'm not putting this in free stuff here. It will be available on my site only. userid: freeuser password: free

Can one have too many gills? Probably not. Was following this thread so knew dcort was involved also. I just fancied the challenge. Mine uses switching geometry... ie the neck now has a dial for a normal or gilled neck and includes a gill material. It's mapped to match the existing so changes to existing maps will not be required although you will be hard pressed to show much detail. I don't think I need to use Mover since the only matching vertices are the interfaces to the head and chest but will do so to be on the safe side. If you need it tonight then email me at [pcooke@philc.net](mailto:pcooke@philc.net) else it will be on my site [www.philc.net](http://www.philc.net) tomorrow as the weekly freebie. Tips hit hat to dcort :) [![philc_agatha_white_on_black.jpg](http://www.philc.net/images/logos/philc_agatha_white_on_black.jpg)](http://www.philc.net)

Phil and Dcort, Just as one can never have too many dragons (hmm... better check the sheep population), having a variety of merfolk is wonderful, too. Thank you both! Carolly

dcort ( ) posted Fri, 22 June 2001 at 8:15 PM

Hey, Phil. Honestly yours probably look better. Mine are the same ones from the mermaid and sea nymph that I did over a year ago. They work okay but suffer from the dreaded Poser shading problem. I just cobbled together a new .cr2. If I modeled them again now I'd make better ones. Anyway, hopefully people will enjoy the new aquatic Posettes!

Can you make a guy one Phil? Please, please, please! Geez, can't have the lady without her fellow can we?

PhilC ( ) posted Wed, 27 June 2001 at 5:05 PM

A merman....? now there is a thought. With a tail I presume?

Just the gilly thing would be great.. got tails already.. I am another that would like somehow to web the hands... we may need to make hand props and replace the other ones, huh? Been thinking of the same sort of character for months now, but haven't gotten time to work it out.

AprilYSH ( ) posted Thu, 28 June 2001 at 2:07 AM

hey, um, since we have two santas here :) i would like gills on the sides of the torso... like where the rib bones would be... i did webbed finger in post... would be interesting to see them in the model. is there a free merman? i totally missed that!!! where, where!

I have free merman tails for Mike and the P4 dude, available right now at 3D-Arena. I also have my Indigo for Mike tail available in the store, which has the rib gills. I think it would be very difficult if not impossible to do webbed hands very well with the current limitations of Poser 4.x. Maybe in a future version this will become more practical. Now someone can go prove me wrong. Maybe in Pro Pack with bones it could be done. My free mermaid and sea nymph are available at 3D-Arena too, and also at Island Graphics. I hope to reinstate more downloads from my site soon. Thanks again to those nice people who have been hosting these files for me. If Phil and I keep duplicating our efforts like this, we could end up with two of everything. Maybe someone could model Noah's fantasy ark.

great stuff from the two "masters" I admire 8 ) [I realize that modesty forbears either of you to accept teh moniker "master" ergo the quotes] ye both continually impress me with your work 8 ) CHeers and thank you very much webbed fingers eh? hrmmmmm.....

Petunia ( ) posted Thu, 28 June 2001 at 1:55 PM

DCort... your mer-stuff is great.. I have downloaded those and thank you very much! OOOOO Wizzard, is that a hrmmmmmm as in thinkin about those webby thingies? :) BTW: The sock morphs do a great webby detail for the feets with a bit of fiddling with the dials, and can fit into shoes. The gills on the ribs is another great idea Alisa! Thanks to all these folks that like to play Santa around here. I appreciated the time and effort they spend with us mere mortals making us happy as clams.
