Subject: Curiosity killed the cat but I have to ask re. fantasy outfit footwear.....

dasquid ( ) posted Mon, 21 July 2008 at 4:19 AM · edited Wed, 20 November 2024 at 2:50 PM

Ok  I buy a lot of content for Poser and when I see something new I generally buy it if it looks like I can use it in some project or other that I have in my mind at the time.

One thing that is very likely to make my not buy a fantasy outfit for  V4 (my currently most used figure) is the footwear. it seems like every time I see a really cool outfit that  comes out I click on it and start thinking of what I can do with it ....then I scroll down and see the feet and theres her toes and sometimes even her toes AND heels sticking out! WTF?  this just baffles me why? Especially if  its some fantasy warrior outfit, come on even if it is fantasy you want your feet protected so you dont step on  poky things on the battlefield, sure caltrops go through most footwear but  you are much less likely to be cut stepping on a fallen blade or  whatever else is on the battlefield if you wear normal type boots.

Why do content creators do this so often? I understand  that it may be someones image of what the outfit is supposed to look like but come on as many outfits as I have almost bought and reconsidered because of the footwear, there has to be another reason. Are completely enclosing  boots that much harder to make?

Yeah I know I can use a different pair of boots but  when the outfit comes with pants that are attached to whatever footwear that is included  that means that half of the outfit is gone right there and I have to do something else from the waist down. I bought  the Bootz by Rhiannon because they really fit in with my stuff but I can only use them in so many renders before they start getting tired.

Poisened Toenails?
Deadly stinking heels?

I'm not in fantasy at all, but now that you mention... you're right!

You are right indeed, but most of the time these outfits are just fantasy, & made to be sexy as well. Good protection seems to be down on the list of the maker.

LOL, no kidding.  If I were an amazon warrior I'd definitely go elsewhere than Poserdom for my armor! Especially if I wanted to live beyond leaving my Temple!

It's not only the footwear that leaves the body exposed, the armor does too.  I don't know any warriors, but I'm sure if I did, they wouldn't be out killing things with a sword while wearing a thong and pasties!

Actually some of the old Greek warriors didn't wear much more than that ... well other than no pasties

Yeah, pasties. Hope they weren't too hot while wearing 'em! :blushing:

Yeah, absolutely fabulous, until they fail to deflect that first blow...  then, not so much.

Whew, after reading this I'm glad my upcoming outfit will come with two pairs of boots.

But, yea, I hear you on the bare feet and unprotective clothing. I thought of that many times myself.

These outfits may just be thongs and pasties, but often the shins are heavily armoured. What's with that? And pointy bits that make me wonder how they can move effectively without impaling themselves. 😕 I guess that's what makes it fantasy, 'cause it's so impractical!

StevieG1965 ( ) posted Mon, 21 July 2008 at 5:53 PM

Great thread...I was actually on my way to the forums to ask the exact same question.  I've stopped buying any type of "fantasy" clothing because in the past few months they, like you said, have only bare feet, exposed toes or exposed heels and toes.  I guess I wouldn't whine so much if Vic's toes didn't look like fingers, and yes, I have the toe shortening morph.

Actually it goes a bit more then that, about 4 months ago a really awesome armor set came up in the store that was mind blowing until you caught the promo pics showing it didn't cover the feet ***or ***the boobs!!  It covered every inch of her body except the feet and the breasts!   That was a bit much for me.

I'm beginning to think that it's too difficult for some artists to make foot wear that covers the feet completely, but, that's just my opinion.  I realize it's fantasy and everyone has an ideal design, but, at least give the users an option to cover the toes...how much more difficult would it be to have both semi foot covering and total foot covering as an option for the armors??  That would make them fly into my cart faster then they appear in the store.

I do stand corrected, I did make an exception for Aery Soul's Classic Fantasy, even though it has no foot coverings, I love the liquid metal look of the outfit.  My only wish would be she releases an expansion pack that has a necklace and design for the stomach.

Winterclaw ( ) posted Mon, 21 July 2008 at 7:35 PM

I think I've seen a few rare fantasy armor at daz that have most of the body covered, if not all... including the feet.  However I'd be happiest if there were a good number of options for both fantasy and realistic armors.

The sci-fi version of this complaint that I have is the Frankenstein shoes most Sci-fi outfits seem to have. You get this great outfit or powered armor, and then the shoes belong to Bozo the Clown.

One of the PITA with making good looking shoes for lot of the figuresare their clunky feet.

What I do with the shoes is make the model so the shoe look good, and then turn off the toes and the foot. You get much better looking shoes that way.

Human foot bends and squishes inside a shoe much moe then on Poser figures.

When one tries to model around this clunky foot, shoes don't look all that realistic or poroportionate, or cute.

Ah!!  See, that's a good way!!  I know I wouldn't have a problem, and I don't think many others would either, with turning the foot and toes off to get an awesome shoe or boot for the armors.  You just have to remember to pose the feet before you turn them off.

And the best example to show how good it would work is the Super Funky Suit for V4 by Powerage.  Ya gotta turn her foot and toes off to get the awesome boots to work.  I would gladly start purchasing again if the creators would take this route.

Ok, I'm calm again. :tt2: But you have to admit, that's a great solution from Connie.

We used to turn them off all the time, I have no problem with it until someone comes up with an animation of someone taking off their shoes....lol

ooh, super funky is super cute!!!!!

About the shoes, I try to provide a fitting and on/off utility pose.

But ... if the shows and armour were sensible, they wouldn't be "fantasy" outfits, would they? Can you imagine a Boris Vallejo heroine in practical, low-heeled court shoes?

This really puzzles me too.  Sometimes I come to the forum to point and laugh, but usually I just accept this stuff and move on.

Maybe a lot of content creators have a foot fetish?

Content creators often seem to do really bizarre, even stupid things.  The most egregiously stupid is when they create a piece of conforming clothing, but only for one side of the body.  WTF?  That's plain stupid.  IT'S DIGITAL, FOLKS, making another one, mirrored for the other side of the body, isn't going to cost you more fabric.  I'm no modeler, much less a conforming clothing creator, but I'm gonna go way out on a limb here and guess that making a mirror of a part is trivial.  It just never occurs that some wacked-out customer might have the REVOLUTIONARY idea of...putting the part or piece on the other side of the figure!  OMG!!!

Don't even get me started on naming and directory structure conventions.  I'll be reaching for my pitchfork and torches before you can say "witch."

No, I'm pretty sure just putting in the hours on the practice field would do away with the whole fabulous look.  Permanently.  :D

Well this has been really educational for me, I thought that all this outfits had Olive Oyl's shoes cuz they were fashionable. Most outfits I buy planning even as I purchase which boots/shoes I'll be substituting.

Without naming names - I've seen some beautiful outfits, and then the shoes have a very cartoonish, clunky look compared to the rest. Like they were an afterthought or the creator ran out of steam, or even didn't know how to make them. Who knows.

Maybe all Poser users whom may have had a foot fetish saw V3 and V4 toes, and ran away screaming.

I happen to love cute shoes more then any opther piece of wardrobe! My standard wardrobe is Jeans, T-shirt and funky cute shoes.  I think that's more like a shoe obsession then a foot fetish in my case.    I don't like bare feet all that much, walking in them or seeing them.

I know what you mean. There's a fairly new item in the marketplace that will probably be my next purchase. I think it's very clever and screams for a boot with a sleek silhouette, or at least a sleek foot, maybe a flared cuff... instead, it too has a clunky round bubble toed boot.

I thought it was because they were easier to model, but if it's just a matter of turning the figure's toes off... create a toe's invisible pose, give it away in free stuff and let's have some attractive footwear!
