Subject: how to use poser and DAZ studio items in carrara?

Hi there,

I'm kind of new to carrara, so I was wondering how I can use poser and Daz Studio stuff inside carrara. I can import props and figures, but I can't pose them. ( I can import poses as clips ). I don't know how to change textures, or how to apply faces or hands from the poser library, or how to pose figures inside carrara.

If someone could explain that to me, Id be very gtrategull.

Okay, using Carrara 6, if you look at the browser window at the bottom of the screen, you will see that there is a tab called content.  Click there first.  If you have a document open you will need to make sure te tab at the left it set to browser first.  Once in the content window, you should see a small folder icon to the right at the top of the browser.  Click this and choose add runtime.  A file window will open, navigate it to the runtime folder of your poser installation.  Normally it's something like C:Program Filese frontierPoser 7.  Once you click it, click ok and the system should show you the content of that folder.  To use an object, just drag and drop it into the scene.  To use a morph, texture etc, just drag and drop it on to the object like you would a shader.  Using this method, you can use any morph which works for poser.  You can manipulate any object, or part of an object that you could in Poser using Carrara's far superior movement, rotation, and scaling controls.  All available morphs will show up in the properties box for any object or section of an object whish is selected.  You can also modify textures and displacement maps in any image editor and pull them in using the standard Carrara Texture room.  Once you get used to it, you probably will never mess with the clunky Poser interface again.  Have fun and good luck.

I wanted to thank you for your videos - they look really helpful!  I wondered if they are available in a higher resolution or a larger format,  to make it a bit easier to read.

Hi, I would also like to say thankyou for creating these videos. I just downloaded the Carrara demo and was seriously struggling with it. Your help in understanding the program is much appreciated. I now have a much better chance of evaluating the software within the 30 day trial period. I am looking to purchase a decent renderer for my Poser content and Carraras extra features seem to make it a good option. Now back to attempting to understand it, only 28 days left, LOL.

Hello, everybody,

Me again. I found that some things don't get imported properly into carrara. Sometimes morphs are not there the way they should be, and props that contain more than one element, held together using the parent-function from DAZ studio are pulled apart again.

As far as morphs go, its not just DAZ studio, also some morphs that work fine in Poser 7 don't work in carrara.

Do I need some kind of plug in to make a flawless passage from Poser or Daz Studio to Carrara?
I read that there is a plugin for daz that allows you to save in PZ2 format, but I can't find it on the DAZ site, does anybody knows what plugin allows me to do that?

Yes and no and yes and no.

DAZ recommends "Native" import; that's when Carrara translates the Poser files and format to create a figure or object that is rigged and textured Carrara style.  Few would disagree that Carrara rigging is generally superior, and Carrara texturing is potentially superior (there is a less history on developing the quality shaders, but the tools are in place).

As native objects, they are then fully editable, which opens up a great deal more flexibility.  However, the Poser universe has come out with a number of helpful (and less-than-helpful) hacks, such as JCMs, texture poses, super-conforming, morph injection, and so forth.  Some of these do not translate correctly into Carrara.

(To be completely honest, there is a lot of Poser content out there that fails the "Death Station 9000" test; it works, mostly, but it does not follow all of the usual conventions -- .obj files separate from cr2, for instance, jpeg format texture maps, no spaces in file names, etc.  What you can usually get away with in an actual Poser version, you can't always get away with in Carrara.)

The other major mode is by using the plug-in called "Transporter."  "Transporter" creates a live link between a Poser scene -- (meaning, you have to not just have Poser, you have to use Poser to set up the figures et al).  It takes more RAM, requires Poser, the imported objects are much less editable -- but it gets more things right.

In particular, Transposer is still the best way to get Dynamic Cloth into a Carrara scene.  (Again, a note; yes, you can export out a cloth sim as an object, or even as a set of morphs.  You can recreate the cloth sim in Carrara with Carrara native tools.  Some people find just keeping the live link to the original cloth sim more flexible, however.)

The other downside to Transposer is a spotty support (why I said "yes, no, yes, no..." above.)  It may or may not be installed in your Carrara version, may or may not be compatible, free, and may or may not be compatible with your current version of Poser.  It isn't actually that complex a question, but I haven't the heart to track down all the variations myself.  All I know is I've got it and it works good for me.  (But on the gripping hand, I haven't had that much trouble with Native mode either.)
