Subject: OT: What does the Renderosity Newsletter and Frontpage say about our hobby?

MarkHirst ( ) posted Sun, 20 July 2008 at 10:28 AM · edited Sat, 28 September 2024 at 10:02 AM

I am sure that you, like me, get the weekly Renderosity newsletter, and also like me, you frequent the forums too.

I have work colleagues who get newsletters and frequent forums too. One guy is a big Harley-Davidson fan, owns two bikes that I know of, and trawls forums and web sites in pursuit of his hobby. If I wander over to ask him a question over lunch, it isn't unusual for me to see a picture of a fabulous looking Harley on the screen, or a list of parts in a catalogue for Harley bikes. No big deal.

These days, I've not been opening my Renderosity newsletter or going off to links to the front page because frankly, I'm not sure what people would make of it if they looked over my shoulder.

Is it just me, or does the Renderosity newsletter look more and more like a lingerie catalogue these days. The front page also must give people some interesting impressions of what our hobby is about.

Is it just me?

Its just you ..

For me it gives me a little view of this going on at RO... and when i want more i can click the itmes on the Frontpage...

And sure the News letter has Thumbs in it for products sold on RO...
But whitout thumbs or products you whould not have the place to post this message 😉

And what people think when they look over your shoulder... well when some one see's me here on line or in the gallerys they just ask is that all 3D.. and think nothing of it further...
Because they know im not into other "naughty" things on the internet....

For me it what people think when they look over "mine Or Your" shoulder will be only a extension of what they think of "you / me" in the first place... so i have no problem with it...

Yes, quite true. I think what exercises me more is the difference say between the wall to wall bikinis and lingerie that is the Renderosity newsletter, and the ones from Cornucopia which tells a completely different story about what the hobby is about.

Must be an age thing, I dunno :-(

No, it's not just you. I won't open the rendo front page at work any more (I have the forums bookmarked directly). A pity because I can happily open CG Talk and a variety of C4D-related sites if I want to, but not this one.

I tell you something, I am not sure that people looking over your/my shoulder DO think! ^_^

Without joking, when you see the number of more or less "naughty" power-point slideshows that are passed over the enterprise networks ...

No, it's not you. It's just a reflection of the fact that Renderosity has become a 98% Poser marketplace/forum site over the last two or three years.

I agree, I don't bother with the newsletter anymore, seems they might as well call it the Poser Monthly Newsletter.

I'm too ashamed. I'd rather have a porn site on screen so as least people would think I had an interesting hobby!!!

Seriously though, Rendo is all about the store & it's all mainly clothes for barbie. I wouldn't want work colleagues to see me looking at it.

Which begs the question, where did the other artists go to?

I think they're still here, probably in larger numbers over time.  The newsletter and front page reflect what's popular and sells. I suspect that artists who work with less poser dependent content are also more likely to make the content for themselves.  Those of us who primarily use Vue are usually going to be looking for other things, and that's reflected in the content at Cornucopia more than it is here where the programs being used are so varied.

Well god bless Poser, or this place might be the 3rd or 4th largest artzone in the world huh...instead of the 2nd(or 8th) I for one love it here. it is indeed my 2nd home(maybe 3rd) Renderosity is a good place to be regardless....after all in the end of it all..whats really wrong with titties?!?

but anyway...

Trepz,
Anyone who doesn't like boobies, who isn't < 12 years old, female, or gay, should be SHOT!!!  :tt2:
hehe.

I dont' get why poser is so much NVIATWAS, anyway,, sigh, much as I adore the female form, both erotically and artistically...there's so much else to do!

Niandji is seriously, one of my fave artists with semi-naked women, his work's beautiful (with Vue and Poser). And Boris Vallejo and his wife's work blow my socks off (his work is paint though and often very erotic, but no one on Earth paints skin like he can, best artists in world, far as I'm concerned).

But, Rosity can do more than always have lot of feminine scanty clothing....showing erotic art is great: sorry, this is 21st century, this is an art site, so prudes can get stuffed, far as I'm concerned. We've had enough of the gits for 20 centuries.
Likewise, Rosity can do more than focus on Poser glamour.

Well I must be put away then cuz boobies are not my thing I like legs, feet and a nice shapely buttocks....LOL!!! But I agree a few months ago Rendo was praising the masters and how many of the master's subjects were about the female form???

To me there is a BIG difference between porn and art unfortunately the average joe can't seem to grasp the difference. I will probably have visitors with torches and pitchforks visiting me for this but as far as I am concerned most  NVIATWAS images lack any form or substance. Most have no depth, no theme other than sticking a naked woman in a picture with some sort of weapon  posed in some sort of strange way. And indeed there is so much more to explore!

melikia - If you haven't done one yet you must get round to it, it seems no one is a proper artist until you've created one, lol!
Over the years this must have been the most popular render amongst Poser users.

silly vicky.

i did my share of nudes.  just not with sword in temple =D

ok, i need a tow truck... my brain is stuck in the depths of depravity again.

Well, to be a REAL 3d artist one must really do chrome spheres over water!! I did!
All hail the Great Bryce for that! ;)

hehe!

Melikia,
Hmmm, went where one wonders?! :D

well yeah, swords nakedness, dangling bits...ouch!

Some of the NVIATWAS stuff is extremely well done, it's just...there's so much of it :(

Maybe we should have a few months of Vue challenges where the challenge is to recreate one of the great cliche renders...

Month 1: a chrome sphere on a checkerboard surface
Month 2: a tea pot
Month 3: a chrome sphere over water
Month 4: a nice clean modernist interior (chipp's going to do well that week)
Month 5: NVIATWAS (temple to be modeled in Vue)

;-)
