New Box-1.7Gz Intel, 512 PC800 RDRAM, 64Meg GeForce3 New System W2K (SP2) Poser P4.3 Copied files from W98 system. Brand new. W2K problelms so far. Poser wont recognize .png files. Poser will not delete any library files created in W98. It will delete files it created. Poser will not memorize lighting, (including memorize all) Lighting is totally screwed up! Load a PZ3 file and the lights will be out. Click on a light (below the render window) and the light comes on. Would any of this have to do with some kind of conficts with a FAT32 system trying to read FAT files? Id appreciate advice from those wise ones who have gone before. Thanks Pinto

Your problem sounds like you have to reinstall Poser as it was not installed properly or there are version conflicts with the files you are using. When you say copied files from Win98 what files do you mean? Win2000 is in reality Win NT5. It is a whole different animal from Win98. Also if you formatted your drive in NTFS and not FAT32 thats a problem also. NTFS is not cross platform compatible and will have problems dealing with files saved in FAT32. You cannot simply copy over files from, and used in and saved in Poser under Win 98 and have them work properly in Win2K. Assuming you did in fact reinstall Poser as a new clean installation you will need to import your files as new into the Win2K Poser and resave. Some people think they can copy over the entire Win98 Poser off of their old harddrive then simply reinstall Poser over it. Because Win98 and Win2K are totally different operating systems it simply will not work. There are many things that might cause your problems. But without knowing how your computer was originally loaded and the apps setup theres not a lot of specifics that can be offered.

Looking at your problem of lighting I had to note your using the GeForce3 graphic adapter. Several companies put out versions using this Nvidia chipset. But they differ in their use of drivers. Make sure you go into your driver prefernce setup and insure the settings are correct. This chipset absolutely requires DirectX8 in order to perform properly. Make sure you have Direct X8 installed. This Nvida chipset is the company's first true GPU, using what is known as the vertex shader instruction set. The other problem / advantage with this graphic adapter is its dependence upon the software application's support for its GPU and instuction set. I don't know if Poser supports this level of 3D graphic engine. If it doesn't and you have the adapter set to take advantage of its capabilities then it could very well create problems. For not having that support will force the adapter to default mode those functions. If you were using Win98 your files created there are in FAT32 format. If your Win2K operating system is using the FAT format then all files in FAT regardless of being 32 or 16 will be read properly. If your system is formatted for NTFS then it will read FAT32 files but will not save in that format. Systems formatted in FAT32 which includes almost all the standard desktop systems will not read a file created in NTFS. Only another NTFS system will read it. It is part of NT's security.

All your Poser files (not the program files) that you copied from Win98 fat 32 will work perfectly in W2k NTFS. If this wasn't the case, file distribution would be a nightmare.

Well, the file system is definatly not your problem. You can copy from and too Win98 partitions as you wish there is no problem with that. Out of my experience you can copy the whole Poser directory from one drive to another as long as you leave its internal structure alone. Never had that kind of problems before... But I have a question: Did you install W2K over on previous installation of Win98 - if so forget it! Best you do in this case is reinstalling from scratch after formating your boot drive. And check if all copied files are marked read AND writeable. Hope it helps - maybe with a bit more info... Arthur.

Hi all! Thank you for the response. Let me go over the specifics a little better. Band new Dell machine. Factory installed W2K.(I upgraded to SP2 on Dell's advice and cured some booting problems). FAT32 file set up. I installed Poser then just copied directory files from my old W98 (1st issue), FAT16 file system. No NTFS is involved. Thanks Pinto

The no delete mystery is solved. Thanks for the tip aheinz! Apparently when I copy files to CD my program sets them to Read-only. This probably effects the memorize function as well. Nice to have a simple solution! Thanks All! Pinto

In case you want to switch to NTFS in W2K (I like it myself, but then I never gave FAT32 much of a test drive) - for system drives, it schedules it for the next reboot: C:>convert /? Converts FAT volumes to NTFS. CONVERT volume /FS:NTFS [/V] volume Specifies the drive letter (followed by a colon),mount point, or volume name. /FS:NTFS Specifies that the volume to be converted to NTFS. /V Specifies that Convert should be run in verbose mode.
